a potter in the netherlands who sells one pot to a customer in belgium & one pot to a customer in germany will have to register with belgian & german packaging waste management systems, which involves various processes and admin fees in both countries. obviously not worth it for a few orders a year.

there is some insane statistic about how long the average drill is used in its life (like three minutes or something) and how they are the number one case study for the importance (necessity) of the sharing economy, community lending, 'circularity,' etc., etc.

social trust evaporated when dewalt and home depot convinced every person in the world they needed to own their own drill instead of go next door and ask to borrow their neighbors or go to the community shed and borrow one.

UC Berkeley Law creates new AI policy that bans AI for "conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising, translating, or editing any work submitted for credit" or exams because "thinking remains the sine qua non of good lawyering (and of a quality legal education)." That's what I'm talking about.
Rule:
The use of AI is prohibited for aid in conceptualizing, outlining, drafting, revising,
translating, or editing any work submitted for credit. AI use is prohibited for any use for
any purpose in any exam situation. Students may not upload course
materials—including assignments, readings, slides, class recordings, or other class
content—into generative AI systems. AI can be used for research on papers ONLY for the
limited purpose of identifying sources, such as cases, statutes, or secondary sources.
Students are responsible for the accuracy of their research and all other aspects of their
submitted work. Citations to sources that do not exist will raise a presumption of
prohibited AI use

there's a decent soy sauce made in the netherlands (tomasu) that we use sometimes, and lots of nice real soy sauces in most asian grocery stores. i was just reacting to the claim that soy sauce is an ultra processed food, which it isn't (always).

Matthew Archer @matthewarcher.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
but the categories are already pretty clearly defined to account for the ingredients and specific processes, so i'm not sure why they're "stupid" other than being a bit too easy to misconstrue for rage bait

Matthew Archer @matthewarcher.bsky.social · 30/04/2026
well yes we can agree that "'chemical' soy sauce" counts as an ultra processed food (and in the text youve posted is even described as an approximation of soy sauce), but lots of soy sauce is real and made through a pretty straightforward fermentation process, which is not a UPF.

sure there is a wellness-to-fascism pipeline (old news at this point, tbh), but ultra processed foods are objectively bad and it is very weird to try and equate antiUPF with antivax. the evidence is very clear that high UPF exposure is horrible for your health, that UPFs are bad for the environment,
