Gotta say that was one heckuva Mahler 5 tonight at @nyphil.org. Apart from a few off notes the orchestra sounded magnificent. Special kudos to horn soloist in the third movement and the strings and harp for that amazing Adagietto. Love that symphony so much. Sky was also spectacular!

This book is fucking great - and funny as hell. Don’t know why I never read it before (maybe the length?) but it’s fantastic. Don’t think it would make a great cinematic experience because there are so many diversions and so much of the fun is in the dialogue and the narrative.

Squeeze with a stellar show at Radio City. The entirety of their new album “Trixies” sandwiched between hits and a few deeper cuts. Band is right as can be and Glenn’s voice is as fresh as ever. Fantastic guitarist too. Haircut 100/Adam & the Ants opened. The former was great, the latter less so.

Congratulations to Hudson Valley Shakespeare on the opening of their stunning new theatre overlooking the Hudson in Garrison, NY. Had the privilege of enjoying a lovely production of “As You Like It” in damn near ideal weather, and we were graced with a hell of a sunset at intermission.

Mahler’s 10th symphony was left unfinished but has been reconstructed. Not sure how well it holds together but it’s an interesting glimpse of where he may have been headed. Only saw the first movement performed by MTT at Carnegie Hall. This is a very intense recording that i’ll be going back to.

Can’t quite get my head around Mahler’s 8th Symphony - just seems a bit overambitious. Saw it performed in Philly with Yannick Nézet-Seguin and it was a grand occasion but kinda left me cold. Would like to find a way into this work but Solti’s Chicago recording will have to suffice for now.

Symphony 5 I always associate with this recording, which was used as the soundtrack of a Pompeii exhibit at the IBM museum in Manhattan (sadly gone now). By turns furious and gentle.

Been listening through Mahler’s symphonies this weekend and revisiting some of my favorite recordings. Still have 7 and 9 to go and am leaning toward Karajan for 9. First up is #1 with Bernstein and the Concertgebouw. Earthy and intense. Had to have Lenny in here!

This is such beautiful playing. Just overflowing with warmth and heart. Unsurpassed IMO though there are other great recordings out there that give it a close run. The second movement of Symphony #2 is just divine. But it’s all great. This is the Columbia cycle, not the NYPO recordings.

Spent the best year of my life in Paris in the 80s and this record was the soundtrack of that year. Still a total banger. Their guitarist and co-songwriter Fred Chichin died young and I paid my respects last time i was in Paris! 🙌 Lots of great night dancing to this and other stuff at Salle Wagram!
