A slide from a 2012 talk I gave on quant reasoning and writing, my sneaky way of teaching mixed company what a commutative diagram is Also that plenty of folks travel the "informal reasoning" solution path in their everyday lives who say they're "bad at math" bc they don't take the long way round
"Problem-solving pathways", with a square whose vertices are labeled (clockwise from top left) Story Problem -- Reading --> Symbolic Problem -- Formal Reasoning --> Abstract Solution -- Writing --> Contextual Solution, and a fourth arrow from Story Problem -- Informal Reasoning --> Contextual Solution

Standard usage of “or” in math includes that which meets both criteria - the upper-right Venn diagram - where often the vernacular “or” has the connotation of “either/or but not both” as in the lower left. Am I being pedantic, or am I just some guy on Bluesky? Yes.
Venn diagrams shading the intersection “A AND B”, the union “A OR B”, the symmetric difference “A XOR B”, and the complement “NOT (A OR B)”
