jerry garcia at 44 is a lot different than you and i at 44 😁 as indiana jones said, “it’s not the years, it’s the mileage.”

saw the jays when they were in town to play the twins at target field early this season. we were surrounded by lots of jays fans who took a bus down from manitoba, and every single one of them despised vlad. i found it a bit shocking.

we didn’t stop, but will at some point. every time we cruise past van meter on the highway i think, “have to stop in there next time.” 😁

drove through his hometown last week on our way home from utah!

mattfrantzen61.bsky.social @mattfrantzen61.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

totally agree. my sense is that metrics like WAR and OPS/OPS+ will be a bigger factor.

mattfrantzen61.bsky.social @mattfrantzen61.bsky.social · 26/07/2026

my sense is that because of the generation of roids guys, the HOF has a big gap it’s trying to fill. the HOF doesn’t want a year when nobody gets in, so that creates space for guys like jeff kent. kent is a marginal HOFer. not awesome, but better than some (bill mazeroski comes to mind). alas.

i love watching them play as well, it’s a labor of love for hockey parents.

the hockey lifestyle is the best lifestyle. both of our sons play (one on the high school team, the other will be a first-year bantam). my grandfather played a century ago, my dad played in college, and my brothers and i played. hockey is the best, even if the gear smells awful!

joe gets my vote for “the best manager who was also an excellent player.” lots of HOF players have managed, but none of them were as successful as joe. a class act, one of my favorites.

one of my favorite birds. i live near minnehaha creek in minneapolis, lucky to see lots of green herons here.

they sorta looked like bowman baseball cards, but were not. they used these to close off the upper deck seats in the outfield.

one of my favorite players, very john olerud-esque. freddie will get 3,000 hits and 600 doubles. first-ballot HOFer. a real joy to watch.

by comparison, salvy’s numbers pale to those of joe mauer (who didn’t catch the last few years of his career). i thought joe was a marginal/borderline HOFer, but he put together a much better statistical case for the HOF (.306 career hitter, three batting titles, an MVP, and a WAR of 55).

030

mattfrantzen61.bsky.social @mattfrantzen61.bsky.social · 09/05/2026

he’s a catcher, so his marginal numbers get more attention than they ought to. but they are still marginal numbers, very marginal (a career OPS+ of 104). and his current career WAR of just over 35 is about half for a decent HOFer. salvy’s a pretty good player, but he’s not a HOFer.

paducah’s a great place. my son and i stayed in the restored downtown at the 1857 hotel on our way back from the derby a few years ago. paducah far exceeded my expectations.

i was at the game today. not only did the bullpen blow it, but the “offense” left ten runners on base. tough team to watch.
