One need only to take a quick look at his current artstyle on JURO to understand that he is not drawing this "Martial War". Takei didn't touch that stuff outside of creating the designs and some concept arts.

And judging from the drawings in the trailer (www.instagram.com/martialwarof...), it's clear to me that the actual artists are Jet Kusamura and/or other Takei's assistants, since at best the art looks like a subpar imitation of his style and at worst it's just plain ugly.

Now I get it, it's the product of a nepo baby (one of the two american guys is a 50k followers influencer as well as the son of longtime Donald Trump's friend Dana White, the president of UFC). That's why it gets this kind of marketing even though it looks so bad, fake and amateurish.

Isn't it better for Haruki Murakami's fans that he keeps not winning the nobel? If he wins, they lose the tradition of gathering together every year to cheer for him. It'd be like witnessing your favorite soccer team win the championship and then stop watching soccer forever.

eh? This is maybe Takei's worst artwork ever. I don't get the point of employing a japanese artist to make him draw something that couldn't be further from his style written by a bunch of nobodies.

Yeah, I agree that it works much better if you've already seen the whole series. I don't get why people seem to be obsessed with inviting others to watch it in the middle of it. If you don't know who Ypsilon is, it loses all of its power.

"When books become 'texts' that we 'interact' with according to criteria of utility, the written word will have become simply another aspect of our advertising-driven televisual reality. […] It means nothing less than the death of inwardness—and of the book." – Susan Sontag
I’m sorry to have to tell you that books are now considered an endangered species. By books, I also mean the conditions of reading that make possible literature and its soul effects. Soon, we are told, we will call up on “bookscreens” any “text” on demand, and will be able to change its appearance, ask questions of it, “interact” with it. When books become “texts” that we “interact” with according to criteria of utility, the written word will have become simply another aspect of our advertising-driven televisual reality. This is the glorious future being created, and promised to us, as something more “democratic.” Of course, it means nothing less than the death of inwardness—and of the book.

Gamification can be a great tool to remain consistent and build an habit out of studying, but you need to be capable of being your own game master and to have the honesty to not be too permissive with yourself.

I don't think there's anything wrong with using Duolingo if you are aware that it's just a way to pass the time and learn a couple of new words from another language. But it can clearly become a trap because it's tuned to making its users develop the delusion of learning a language for real.
200
Matteo Caronna (Maborupa) @matteocaronna.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Of course all of this is connected to the fact that Duolingo is a privately owned company that aims at making a profit. Their business is not teaching you a language, but keeping you engaged with the app in a long span of time.
100
Matteo Caronna (Maborupa) @matteocaronna.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
That there is a wide disconnect between its model of gamification and the learning process is clear from the fact that things like power ups to freeze your streak exist. Even if you don't lose your streak, if you don't study for a day/week you are still skipping a day/week in real life.
100
Matteo Caronna (Maborupa) @matteocaronna.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The bare minimum to maintain a streak on Duolingo is insufficient to learn a language because it's too low effort even when compared to the less-intensive method of self-study, especially if you want to study a language that is vastly different from yours (like japanese is for most westerners).
100
Matteo Caronna (Maborupa) @matteocaronna.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
The problem with Duolingo is not the gamification in itself, but the fact that said gamification is not adjusted with learning in mind and is instead tuned to keeping the user happy. No frustration, no friction, just the illusion of progression even when you're doing virtually nothing.

These acrilic stands reminds me of how bad TMS is at handling the Lupin The Third franchise and at catering to the fans, which is probably one of the reasons why its popularity is in steep decline in Japan. These acrylic stands are completely inconsistent and even contain a giant mistake.

Coincidentally, Yamazaki is also the same director that made two movie adaptations of books written by a major extreme rightwing novelist famous for being an outspoken denial of Japan's war crimes and a close friend to the late rightwing twotimes PM Shinzō Abe.

idea of the Japanese population as the main (->only) victim of its government without any reference to what Japan actually did to other Asian populations. I'd say that the politics of the movie can be described at best as naif since how much they try to present an uncontroversial view of WW2.
