Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 30/09/2026And where would you like your 56k modem and CD burner sent sir? 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 17/09/2026Just open up a stand outside your nearest McDonald's. Their machine will be busted, so you'll make a killing. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 06/09/2026I can assure you that the drivers in BC are not representative of other drivers in Canada. Ontario and Quebec drivers are rightfully ranked as the worst. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 06/09/2026I regret to inform you that it doesn't really get better, but you will get used it, which is close to better. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 06/09/2026That one monster bears a striking resemblance to King Ghidorah. Pure happenstance, as that Kaiju didn't make their first appearance for another three years. 000
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 05/09/2026*boyfriend, but we're still getting used to that ourselves. Be prepared for a lot of rain. 😬 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 04/09/2026My daughter lives with a trans male in Surrey, BC. As you say, no place can ever be 100% safe (for anyone!), but he's gotten a lot of support and relatively little hassle. Your daughter picked a good place! 120
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Having a loving relationship can be the bitterest sweetness. And the stronger the bond is, the more bitter the partings are. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 31/08/2026They ventured into Canada briefly. We had a store just down the street from us. Lasted a year or so and then retracted. I think there might be a few stores still because you see the boxes on stores sometimes, but it never took off. I didn't care for them, personally. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 21/08/2026That would certainly have been interesting to see, but CM barely fits in with DC (imo) and would be wholly unsuited to Marvel. At least as-is; I assume he'd be an utterly different character if that purchase had happened. 110
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 08/08/2026Part of a plan to reduce the summer break? I would've hated that as a kid, but it makes a lot of sense education-wise. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 07/08/2026August 6 is considered end of summer there? Even in Canada, we don't start calling it autumn until Labour Day. 110
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 23/07/2026And if it was in the format of a bildungsroman, it would be called... 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 20/07/2026I presume this is all part of the winning you USians are enjoying? 000
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 19/07/2026"So. The, uh, ... The thing that uh... So wh.. What I'm, uh, saying... ... You know... The.. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 10/07/2026Theobroma cacao, "chocolate, food of the gods". If it wasn't true, they wouldn't have written it in Latin. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 29/06/2026Even as a little kid, I was Marvel obsessed and I did every damn puzzle, coloured every picture, and cut out figures to make paper doll toys. I would love to get my hands on that book again, but I've never gotten a hint of it. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 29/06/2026I think there may have been multiple collections made, or at least multiple printings. My introduction to the line was a thick paperback collection printed in monochrome, but not b&w: each page had a single ink colour, so *this* maze was printed with green ink while *that* word search was in blue. 100
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 22/06/2026I feel you. Mine also did the best he could, which wasn't terrible given his own upbringing. You have to forgive the rest. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 02/06/2026The downside is that the traffic*keeps moving*. They're not appropriate in areas with lots of pedestrians (which is a lesson we learned late). 060
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 02/06/2026Here's a bit of technology that fixes that situation (if circumstances permit): roundabouts. Here in Kitchener, Ontario, we've gone whole hog on them and there is no denying that they keep traffic flowing (and work when the power is out) 170
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 31/05/2026This means blow jobs, BTW. There is no other meaning or connotation. 000
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 29/05/2026You haven't really experienced Rape Me until you've heard it in the original Klingon. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 29/05/2026Yeah, he makes Wonder bread seem spicy. I actually like his standup fine and he did well on SNL, but the ads for this did nothing to pique my interest. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 15/05/2026Waitaminnit. I thought David Bowie is Labyrinth was one of the genders? 020
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 10/05/2026Every gambling addict in the world feels that's what they're doing. 200
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 10/05/2026Not many people get a crippling addiction to watching movies. 200
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 09/05/2026Oh, I get it. It's no different than say, a physics book being updated: all the physics already existed out in the cosmos; we just figured out a bit more. But it's amusing to picture historians and their Sisyphusian task of having to print more books because the goddam history keeps happening. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 08/05/2026I always find "editions" of history books funny. Like, "Wait! Remember where we left off last time? Well, you won't believe what happened yesterday..." 100

Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 29/04/2026I'm on board. I was never a big Venom fan. The concept was great, but they tried too hard to make him edgy and kewl. So the iterations afterwards that kept the edgelord aesthetic but without any of the neat origin concepts were less and less interesting. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 29/04/2026And you resisted the urge to shout, "Put. That. Coffee. Down." at them? Kudos to you, sir. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 27/04/2026When Tolkien used the word froward, I thought it was a typo. 000
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 27/04/2026O how Fortune, inopportune, apes the moon's inconstancy: waxing, waning, losing, gaining Life treats us detestably: first oppressing, then caressing, shifts us like pawns in her play: destitution, restitution, mixes and melts them away. 010
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 26/04/2026Murder (and threats) is usually under state jurisdiction, not federal. Only a few varieties are considered federal crimes. 030
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 25/04/2026There were two British translators, Anthea Bell and Dennis Hockridge. They describe their process in The Complete Guide to Asterix. Basically, they translated as much as they could directly, modified a lot of it, and restarted from scratch where they had to. 120
Matt Deres @mattderes.bsky.social · 25/04/2026It's called romantic tension, my boy. A kind of Sam and Diane / Ross and Rachel thing they're going for. 010
