Prepare to be Corellied @vpfa.bsky.social conference-goers! In the pack there’s a special offer for delegates to pre-order this beauty (is she winking? I like to think so!), and I’ll be speaking in panel two on Monday. The book can be ordered from EER next month www.eerpublishing.com/turner-marie...
The cover of Marie Corelli by Joanna Turner. Part of the Key Popular Women Writers Series. The cover depicts an illustration of a dark haired woman in Victorian clothing standing on a rock, pointing into the distance with the sea behind her and the wind in her hair.Marie Corelli (1854-1924) was a bestselling novelist of the late nineteenth and early
twentieth centuries. Known for her larger-than-life personality as much as her
gripping popular fiction, she was an early example of author-as-brand.
Exploding myths perpetuated by commercial biography, this is the first book on Corelli to draw upon twenty-first century research methods, solving the
longstanding mystery of her birth, and explaining her phenomenal emergence into
Victorian popular culture.
Corelli is shown to conceal working-class origins, a career on the stage, and a decade writing under a succession of pseudonyms for the periodical press. This book exclusively provides newly discovered information on her adoptive family and its network, as well as a never-before-revealed Corelli pseudonym.
This book contextualises the publication of Corelli’s works, discusses her public
speaking career, and evaluates her opinion on suffrage. Packed with rich detail, it
engages throughout with scholarly debates on gender and sexuality.
Corelli is a fascinating and complicated figure, who will intrigue readers interested
in the manifestation of modern celebrity. This book explores Corelli’s authorial self-
fashioning and her canny negotiation of the literary marketplace.
Where Corelli was previously deemed controversial, and she and her fiction classed as symbiotic quirks of the fin de siècle, this book uncovers a far more complex and interesting figure, whose writing reveals much about societal issues of the late-Victorian and Edwardian periods.

Looking back at the 5 best #videogames I played last year & they're dominated by the games shared with others. 1. #Grounded by @obsidian.net - the setting & narrative of this one set it above other 'crafting' games. 2. #SniperElite4 - not a title I thought I'd love, but so great in co-op.

CFP: Sensation Fiction and the Health Humanities
A VPFA Study Day
Loughborough University, 27 March 2026

The Health Humanities and Victorian popular fiction intersect in revealing ways, offering insights into how 19th-century literature shaped and reflected contemporary understandings of health, illness, and the body. Popular narratives not only mirrored anxieties surrounding public health and medical progress but also contributed to shaping public perceptions of health and healing. Health Humanities approaches re-examine these texts to uncover how cultural narratives and literary representations influenced attitudes toward physical and mental well-being, gendered experiences of illness, and the ethics of care in an age of rapid scientific change.

Health Humanities is a particularly useful approach to sensation fiction because it illuminates the ways in which these emotionally charged, often morally ambiguous narratives explore and interrogate concepts of the body, illness, and mental health. Sensation fiction, with its focus on secrets, trauma, nervous disorders, and abnormal psychological states, frequently dramatizes the anxieties of Victorian society surrounding health, gender, and identity. By applying the lens of Health Humanities, scholars can uncover how these texts reflect and shape contemporary medical discourse. Interdisciplinary approaches also highlight how sensation fiction critiques institutional medicine, domestic care practices, and the pathologization of women’s experiences. Ultimately, Health Humanities allows us to see sensation fiction not just as entertainment, but as a culturally significant form that negotiates the meanings of illness, morality, and human vulnerability in a rapidly changing world.

20-minute papers are invited on any aspect of the health humanities and sensation fiction. Topics may include, but are not limited to the following:

•	Madness, Hysteria, and the Sensation Heroine
•	The Role of Doctors and Medical Authority in Se…
