Here Lionel Bently suggests that AI training is *probably* legal under copyright law — but the outputs are likely not copyrightable. Definitely does not seem to be an open-and-shut thing among legal scholars.

He‘s not saying that engineers will be 10x more efficient (though that’s what a lot of people, including this article, heard). And also yes 90% is an absurd number (I use Claude and it’s great but still has so far to go)

I do have a fair amount of concern about this. On one hand, I think comparative advantage is a very powerful tool. If I look at coding, programming, which is one area where Al is making the most progress, what we are finding is we are not far from the world—I think we'll be there in three to six months-where Al is writing 90 percent of the code. And then in twelve months, we may be in a world where Al is writing essentially all of the code. But the programmer still needs to specify, you know, what are-what are the conditions of what you're doing, what-you know, what is the overall app you're trying to make, what's the overall design decision? How do we collaborate with other code that's been written?
