Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 12/11/2025"But we're here, as they say, to do our thing: to bitch and badger, carp and cry, and perhaps give Atlanta...a bit of honest and interesting and, we trust, even readable journalism," is possibly my favorite news passage of all time. 120
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 21/10/2025The “averted a mass shooting” framing—as if it was a certainty—is problematic. It’s certainly what APD wants reported, but news orgs should approach it with more nuance. The potential alleged shooter obviously needed intervention, but saying he was going to shoot is pre-crime shit. 020

Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 05/08/2025In a small personal victory, I finished my newsletter for Thursday two days in advance (except for the section that will be about a hearing happening tomorrow). I was incentivized to write in advance because of other stories I have to write this week, but I'll still take the dub. 100

Reposted by Matt ScottAlex Ip 葉清霖 @alexip718.com · 06/12/2024First reported by @atlpresscollective.com, Atlanta City Councilmember Andrea Boone, daughter of Civil Rights leader Joseph E. Boone, filed a motion to ban warming centers from 1000 feet of a school Monday, when the entire city mustered two warming centers in an area of 134 sq. mi. It passed 10-1. 2102
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 06/12/2024Jason Dozier told the rest of Council he had two locations he wanted to use for his own any emergency services as situations arise, so he was the sole no vote. 020
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 06/12/2024There wasn’t a rationale given. Amir Farokhi originally said he’d vote against it because he had a center he thought was within the banned distance, but the city attorney said that center was fine. So he voted for it. 110
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 23/11/2024Same board. They’re supportive of the OIG, except for the Atlanta Business League representative. I don’t think the gulch deal is under the OIG’s purview, unless some sort of illicit payment took place. 110
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 18/11/2024Right after I wrote this tweet, the Council reconsidered Cop City funding, and it passed. 000
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 18/11/2024Council voted to Fund PAD. Funding for Cop City failed to pass. Task force recommendations that would hurt the OIG were held in committee. A $1.5 million contract to a lobbyist was sent back to committee. This is the craziest council meeting. 110

Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 08/11/2024Can I justify spending my own money to go report on DC protests before (and likely during) Trumps inauguration? 000
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 07/11/2024However, I think it is exemplary of *one* of the reasons Harris lost: Dems follow the same anti-democratic playbook at Reps, and I think voters have picked up on it. 000
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 07/11/2024Harris lost Georgia by ~116,000 votes, coincidentally about the same number of people the Cop City Vote campaign said signed the referendum that the Democratic mayor of Atlanta didn’t let come up for a vote. The referendum itself isn’t why Harris lost. (cont) 200
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 06/11/2024X stopped working on my phone, and the iPad app we’re forced to use on desktop is barely functional. This is probably a good day for that. 000
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 06/11/2024DeKalb saw about 2500 blank presidential votes in 2020. In terms of percentage points, the difference is minimal, with about .05% more blank votes in 2024. 000
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 06/11/2024DeKalb County actually released numbers for Cruz and West, so I’m speaking strictly of fully blank votes, not effectively blank votes in that county. With about 4,000 fewer total votes in 2024 than in 2020, 1,751 DeKalb voters left the top of the ticket blank. 100
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 06/11/2024DeKalb was a different story. It effectively saw the same blank presidential vote numbers as 2020. 100
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 06/11/2024In 2020, Fulton County had 4,115 votes blank at the top of the ticket. In percentage points, about .5% more of the 2024 electorate in Fulton left it blank. 100
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 06/11/2024The most interesting stat is the number of folks who left the top of the ballot blank. In Fulton County, that’s 6,226 votes. Those could be blank or votes for Cruz or West, which Fulton isn’t reporting (because they’re treated as blank votes statewide). 110
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 06/11/2024Fulton lost ~50,000 registered voters but turned out ~6,000 more voters in 2024. Harris underperformed Biden by ~1,000 votes, nearly a full percentage point. Trump gained ~5500 votes. 100
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 06/11/2024DeKalb had ~4,000 fewer voters on Election Day 2024, though the County’s registered voter pool shrank by 47,000 voters. Harris received 299,039 votes to Biden’s 308,227 in 2024. Trump gained about 4,000 votes over his 2020 total in DeKalb. 100
Matt Scott @mattacpc.bsky.social · 06/11/2024I’ll let national pundits talk about national voting trends. I’m looking at local votes. Harris underperformed Biden in both Fulton and DeKalb Counties, losing about 10,000 votes between the two. Nota bene: Votes are still being counted; these numbers will change slightly. 110
