Great advertising here on @theguardian.com, nicely reminding one just how much the "AI in absolutely everything" trend is enshittifying the world.

It’s only causal inference if it comes from the Inférènce region of France, otherwise it’s just a sparkling correlation.

Seems rather serendipitous that this week’s #tidytuesday topic is on country music given the passing of Dolly Parton yesterday. Also seems somewhat apt that her home state of Tennessee was the most mentioned state in top 30 country music songs.
A map of the contiguous US states highlighting those that were mentioned in songs in the Billboard Country Airplay Top 30 between 2014 and 2019, based on data collated and published by Grady Smith on YouTube. 16 states in total were mentioned in 67 songs. Tennessee was mentioned in 13 songs, California in 10 songs, Alabama and Georgia were mentioned in 8 songs each, and Colorado was mentioned in 5 songs. 5 songs mentioned Carolina but none qualified whether they were talking about North or South Carolina.

“For services to Statistic”…. Yeah, but which statistic?
Screenshot from the King’s Birthday Honours List 2026 announcing a Damehood for Professor Shiela Macdonald Bird. The reason given is “For services to Statistic”.

According to Netlify's logs my tiny little blog in March registered 1GB in bandwith and ~28k in page requests. A blog that I've not updated in ~2 years and which I don't expect many real world humans have read.

I have somehow ended up in the "Fantasy Premier League Community" cluster… which its very funny given that as very much a non-footballer/fan for many years I resisted the requests of my boss to join the work FPL group and make pics based solely on the stats.

"Llamas can't tell the truth" apparently means that somebody is being "exceptionally honest"
According to Google's AI overview: The saying "llamas can't tell the truth" is a humorous idiom, implying that llamas are known for their honesty and straightforward nature. It's not meant to be taken literally, as llamas, being animals, cannot speak or lie in the human sense. The phrase is used to describe someone who is exceptionally honest, perhaps even to a fault, similar to how llamas are perceived as being trustworthy and genuine.

Streeting said he's abolishing the "biggest quango in the world"... perhaps, but definitions matter. And I'm not convinced that NHS England qualifies as the UK's biggest quango let alone the world's.

I wondered when I’d think Bluesky had “made it”… I can now doomscroll effectively and have had my first follows from female presenting OnlyFans-promoting scam-bots. So yeah I think that means Bluesky has made it.

"Abandon all hope, ye who enter here" #rstats Yes is a bit brain melty at first, but it demonstrates how fundamentally flexible R actually is. I wonder in how many other languages it would be this easy to change array indexing.

Typically my little bot project just posts pictures of bridges, boats, wildlife and industrial heritage… sometimes it finds interesting insights into modern life.

Most humans wouldn’t use a dictionary to calculate the area of a square. Yet this pretty much what this example is doing.

One of my favourite things about #rstats is the joyous things you get in R ecosystem documentation.

If they're combining Norfolk (i.e. north folk) with Suffolk (i.e. south folk)... shouldn't the new combined entity just be called Folk or maybe something like Allfolk, Twafolk (Twa being Old English for two), or Bathfolk/Batfolk/Bahfolk (baþe being Old English for both).

While I'm on a posting spree... Have you ever thought "My feed could do with more pictures of the canal network of England and Wales?"... Is that a "yes" I hear? Well then, I'm behind the @narrowbotr.bsky.social bot which does exactly that!

I can't promise I'll post that much here. But by way of #introduction, I do data/analysis things mainly in #rstats, largely on helping public organisations work better.
