Going to try adding more LLM speak into my daily conversations. Starting with things that never needed clarification, like "I'm drinking water, not gravel" and "I'm going to the shop to buy milk, not inspire a revolt against the bourgeoisie" Anybody know how to pronounce the em-dash?

Ontologies are back! Allegedly. I enjoyed this short talk from Frank Coyle, who talks about constraining agents via old-fashioned 'symbolic AI' techniques. Also, if the semantic web is back, can we reclaim the original meaning of web 3.0 now? www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sir5...

This disappointly feels like a very ugly thing that's been bolted on top of Google Cloud for the sake of shipping some nice 'agentic-first' APIs quickly.

It's all well and good doing clever agentic AI, but we'll never escape the mess of software dependencies. Anyway, I wanted to instal 'gws', the new Google Workspace CLI. Pre-requisites are NodeJS + npm, and also the gcloud cli, which is written in Python. All so an agent can check my calendar!

I don't disagree. If I want to know what AI "says" about a topic, I'll ask. Otherwise, I want to read what humans think.

Apparently others have reported similar, along with Russian and Hindi words showing up. A curiosity of the embedding space, presumably. The word it wanted was 'supplement' but through repeated 'fill in the blank' runs it always picked a Chinese word, like 补足, 补充, or 補完.

I've stumbled upon Claude randomly inserting Chinese words into an English sentence. So I started a new chat, copied the text, but replaced the Chinese with <BLANK>, prompting Claude to fill blanks. It generates a Chinese word again! Not the same word either, but one with a related meaning.

#Emacs can do AI too. I've now got a local model running through Ollama, gptel for chat-like interface, and Aider for coding. The bad news is it takes half a day to set up. The good news is I still remember how to write LISP.

"AI Makes you boring": www.marginalia.nu/log/a_132_ai... "The way human beings tend to have original ideas is to immerse in a problem for a long period of time, which is something that flat out doesn’t happen when LLMs do the thinking. You get shallow, surface-level ideas instead."

There's a kind of efficiency arbitrage going on. Initially, getting AI to do your writing was a time-saver, advantageous to busy people. But, as a busy person, if I'm reading something obviously AI-generated I just tune out. It's no longer effective, so we all go back to writing the slow way.

There's style of written English called ChatGPT-ese. It’s not only the impeccably neutral tone and the compulsive urge to provide three key takeaways — it’s the way every sentence feels like it’s being lovingly laminated. In summary, yes I did write this with ChatGPT, and you can tell, can't you?

My dog loves cucumber. According to AI, "Many dogs love cucumbers because they're a refreshing, crunchy, low-calorie, and hydrating snack" So I asked my dog if calories are an important factor. She said I shouldn't take AI too seriously, but refused to comment on calorie-counting. Suspicious.

Modern retailers don't like words like "staff", so instead we get weird things, like Morrisons saying "colleague approval" needed to buy alchohol, and the Ikea website offering a way to "contact a co-worker" if I need help choosing which wardrobe to buy. Guess I'll ask round the office tomorrow...

Reading ChatGPT's "thinking" trace is illuminating. Today, discussing cycling, it decided not to "overwhelm" me with too much physics. Which is probably fair.
