I'm just a bug in the code.

I suppose it comes down to how dismissive the church has been of your legitimacy as a human and how problematic that has been for you. If for you it's not at all, then I'm happy for you.

The potential for abuse is unchanged by the fact that there are actually some non-people on the internet now.

I really think we'll regret formalizing: > those ones aren't people and therefore don't matter for use on the web. If we had this years go, Trump would've found a way to classify liberals as not-people on the internet by now.

No, we've been doing this to each other for hundreds of years. Classifying a group as not people is the first step towards doing awful things to them.

There's a whole subculture that calls such technology "the mark of the beast". I just doubt he's thought this through.

It'll try to be the source of truth about this. And that will attract corruption, as such things do, and then the Pope might regret calling for the creation of such a thing in such a nonspecific way.

And whatever that entity builds, it'll likely support generic stamps of approval: certified human. Certified AI.

It's hard not to read the pope's proposal for *some* mechanism for knowing human from machine as a laying the groundwork for an argument that we should not rethink how we trust but merely that we should rethink who we trust, and that the new authority on who is a human will be chosen by the church.

The church is in a bad position to mediate this conversation, since they've historically been one of the groups that's abusing that sort of implicit institutional trust.

MatrixMantis @matrixmantis.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Instead we need better tooling for understanding which data is trustworthy on the basis of annotations left by people that we know personally: More explicit trust in each other, less implicit trust of platforms or institutions.

The path forward here is not to ignore voices on the basis of the type of thing they are, because untrustworthy people will gain control over that classification.

It's very similar to what we're already doing re: social media. These companies are basically selling access to our friends to us in exchange for our willingness to look at ads. Also if you speak too loudly against power on these platforms you get silenced.

MatrixMantis @matrixmantis.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Focusing on "this content was generated by a human" forces the question: "according to whom?" This creates a valuable position for companies to fight over, and for corruption to target when it wants to silence criticism: just reclassify the critic as a bot.

There's no need to be a dick about it, but one does wonder if the biometrics / watermarking / digital identity slippery slope that the pope has just taken a step towards is one that he'll actually like.

Predicate logic on graph traversals, networks of attestation, workable without needing to trust a platform. Not biometrics or blue checkmarks or captchas.

Knowing whether a human generated something is not as important as knowing which human did, and in what dimensions they are trustworthy as determined by other humans that the user has designated trustworthy for making such assessments. We don't need a proof of human toil, we need a web of trust.
Pope Leo Tweet: In the era of #ArtificialIntelligence, when human dignity is threatened by new forms of dehumanization, ours is the pressing duty to remain profoundly human. We must lovingly safeguard the grandeur of humanity bestowed upon us and revealed in its fullness in Christ, the splendor of which no machine can ever replace.

Car crime went down. Did sexual harassment by police go up? It usually does.

A month after my switch from 1Password to Bitwarden, I wrote a little bit about my experience. The short version: it's fairly effortless and apart from some UX nits, it just works. jola.dev/posts/migrat...

Gossip about how shoes work takes a long time to make it to the deep, and gets garbled along the way. I think it's a pretty good try for an invertibrate.

This kind of censorship should be opt-in as a feature of each user's client, not enforced server-side by the platform. The potential for abuse by authoritarian government way outstrips the potential to help fight terrorism.

Yes, agreed. I was really just poking at your use of the word category. Godel has the right tools here, category theory, as far as I can tell, not so much.

This kind of recklessness won't stop until we start jailing top shareholders. It's a natural extension of the risk/reward game they signed on for.

I doubt we'll see candidate agents harassed singly. Having a drug habit isn't that embarrassing for normal people. Its your body, do to it what you will. We might see the agency looking like a merry band of thugs hiring their buddies who are unfit for the job.
