Ironic, I suppose, that the development of GCSE Natural History continues at a glacial pace

Why say “the exam boards” when in this case it’s almost certainly “the AQA exam board” which is meant. Teachers are always looking for a way to discriminate between exam boards - maybe marking accuracy would be a good metric

In summer 2026, between 37% and 46% failed to answer these one mark questions. In particular, learn your definitions and get them all right in November

GCSE Mathematics: There’s quite the gap between the percentage of marks needed for a grade with AQA/Pearson and OCR/Eduqas, particularly at Foundation tier - they’re about one grade adrift. For example, 44% on F will get you a grade 4 with OCR - but that would score a Grade 2 with AQA or Edexcel 1/4

Assuming there are 40,000 IGCSE Maths students aged 16, they do affect the distribution at the top end for GCSE Maths in England; they get missed in discussions about national figures

A level Maths is taken by students who also take Further Maths (and pretty well always achieve A* or A in maths). Strip them out and there are proportionally fewer A*/A grades awarded for Maths than for Art & Design subjects

One for the nostalgists: GCSE Mathematics 2026 graded A*-G (This exercise fails somewhat around Higher tier grades D and E which shows, if any further evidence was needed, that Grade 4 boundaries were set way too low in 2017 and have been ever since)

Graham Cumming @mathsnot.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
There’s been another surge of entries for GCSE Statistics this year too, mostly made with Pearson/Edexcel - perhaps a set of statistics AQA would rather not see, ho ho

Where have the bulk of GCSE Maths entries been made this summer? Not surprisingly, with Pearson/Edexcel who now have 2/3 of the entry in England. As with A level, AQA’s entries have remained flat though OCR’s very low Foundation tier grade boundaries have helped them pick up a few extra this year

IGCSE Mathematics grade distributions 2017-2026 Pearson and CIE are both very coy about how many entries there are for UK students. For CIE it’s a few hundred but for Pearson, it’s about 40,000 - and this summer nearly a quarter of them were awarded Grade 9. I don’t use emojis often, but 🤔

It’s a small percentage of students who resit more than twice (and should we admire them for their resilience?) - so most of them aren’t on an “endless cycle”

Thursday will be the tenth summer results day where 9-1 grades will be used. Can anyone really be still wondering how they compare to the old A*-G system?

Will AS exam soon be a a thing of the past in England? With three exam boards fighting over fewer than 50,000 entries in total (down by another 15% this year), they seem hardly worth keeping And yet - against the trend, AS Further Maths entries are up 11.3% this year and I’d be sad to see it go

After a bit of a dip recently, A level Psychology has recorded record numbers as the top choice for girls in 2026
020
Graham Cumming @mathsnot.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Entries for A level Maths and Further Maths are up to record numbers again in 2026, but a lot more boys than girls having been choosing it in recent years; there’s not much in it, but the gender gap is larger than ever before. Does this matter and, if so, how is the gap narrowed again?

Using Ofqual Analytics the distributions can be found at national level, but the data isn’t available to do that by exam board
120
Graham Cumming @mathsnot.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Further Maths is a more popular choice in London and the South East, where the London and Oxford exam boards have traditionally had more entries (not sure if that’s still the case). Also AQA’s Further Maths has fewer options than the others
