I wonder if @standupmaths.bsky.social is rage baiting here. That being said, as a teacher I appreciate the flexibility with variable choice.
The Pythagorean theorem written as a squared equals b squared + c squared.

Came across this quote from Project Hail Mary “Math is not thinking. Math is procedure. Memory is not thinking. Memory is storage. Thinking is thinking.” Really making me think about teaching mathematics. Where does math become thinking? #iteachmath #MTBoS

Mathematics Portfolios for Competencies
As mathematics educators, we focus a lot of time and energy on mathematical content. Our students can optimize surface area, complete the square, and find intersections of functions. But, what about m...

I like the topological approach, so yes it is flat even when rolled up.

What are some values for x that aren’t solutions? I am hoping this reveals something about the direction of their number line, positive on the left ?

BC has a grade 11 math history course!! Have any BC math educators on here taught this course? If so, what was your experience?

Here's the details on the weighting. Those that pay the most, get 6 entries (versus one for the free membership). Oh, and those entries will have much better odds than the free one.

Michael Roberts @mathiseverywhere.bsky.social · 30/07/2025
Oh but don't worry, those richest that are able to pay up for the most expensive tier will also get a tax receipt for $4225, so they'll probably only be out of pocket $3000 or so, depending on the province they pay taxes on. In case you were worried about their bottom line.

@canadasocceren.bsky.social deciding to weight the World Cup ticket lottery based on membership fees is yet another example that they don't seem to care about growing soccer across this country. How is the average fan supposed to compete with the richest who can afford $5000?

Lovely! Part of my wondering has led me to the idea of assessing mathematical creativity somehow. Would you ask Ss to do this in an assessment?

The commutative property teaches us that it doesn’t matter who is first, if we work together we achieve greater things.

Michael Roberts @mathiseverywhere.bsky.social · 14/07/2025
I see it through problem solving (but a lot of problem solving is not all that creative) and … that’s about it. I do a Desmos project I love, but I see it as creativity using mathematics, not mathematically creativity.

I’ll call it the regularity index, and it will be the decimal representation of the shortest side divided by longest side.

Good to know! I know my students and their post secondary counsellors all feel that calculus is essential for business and science programs as well. A lot of that is legacy I am sure

This! In my area there are so many great courses available at the grade 12 level, including geometry, statistics, and even history of mathematics. Sadly, university programs emphasize Calculus so Ss won’t choose these. Yet for many they would be more interesting and relevant #MTBoS

This graph jumped out at me immediately - the effect is independent of school type #MTBoS
A graph showing maths levels of boys and girls over three time periods. Although their level start at similar scores, by the final time period, there is a significant gap between boys and girls with boys scoring higher. The scores are broken into different types of schooling, include private and several public types, and the effect is similar across all school types.

I guess we should focus on the behaviour we want to see, which I suspect is taken in other people’s perspectives and ideas? After all, taking turns could be done very passively (really it’s just not talking, as opposed to listening)

We are linear, so it would be 2 days before, which I think would lose its impact. I think the stress really shows up ok the day of the assessment. How long are your blocks? I give only 5-10 minutes for the warmup.
100
Michael Roberts @mathiseverywhere.bsky.social · 03/12/2024
Actually I’ve been trying that too, but only with grade 12s. My younger Ss don’t always handle different ideas constructively…

Michael Roberts @mathiseverywhere.bsky.social · 02/12/2024
I anm experimenting with group warm ups before assessments. Ss get 3 problems to work on in a small group that are related to the assessment before getting the assessment. Noticing a lot fewer questions of me during the assessment, and much less stress. Anyone doing something similar? #iteachmath

This makes me think of @howiehua.bsky.social’s four corner debate between decimals, fractions, ratios and percentages. As team fraction, I feel we made the most precise argument.
