It's 2026 and I'm being told I'm not doing science teaching right because I don't use enough inquiry

If you're a science teacher and your school encourages you to use Gizmos for inquiry based learning, this is exactly what students do.

Here you go
I learned from someone who purchased a set of palm-sized leather bound classics (Dickens, Poe, Tolstoy, Shakespeare, Dante, Homer) from me recently that they used to sell these sets in department stores like Woolworths for just a few dollars because there was a time when every middle class family knew the way to improve yourself was by reading. It made your mind sharper, your heart wiser, gave you the ability to discuss things earnestly and intelligently with those who you were perhaps less educated than. It leveled the playing field, it was part and parcel of the American Dream. Less than a hundred years later…

1989: @nctm.org "Calculators do not replace the need to learn basic facts, to compute mentally, or to do reasonable paper-and-pencil computation." Have teachers and students come to rely on them too much? This is a question worth discussing. #iTeachMath
6. The K-4 curriculum should make appropriate and ongoing use of calculators and computers. Calculators must be accepted at the K-4 level as valuable tools for learning mathematics. Calculators enable children to explore number ideas and patterns, to have valuable concept-develop-ment experiences, to focus on problem-solving processes, and to investigate realistic applications. The thoughtful use of calculators can increase the quality of the curriculum as well as the quality of children's learning.
Calculators do not replace the need to learn basic facts, to compute mentally, or to do reasonable paper-and-pencil computation. Classroom experience indicates that young children take a commonsense view about calculators and recognize the importance of not relying on them when it is more appropriate to compute in other ways. The availability of calculators means, however, that educators must develop a broader view of the various ways computation can be carried out and must place less emphasis on complex paper-and-pencil computation. Calculators also highlight the importance of teaching children to recognize whether computed results are reasonable.

HOW MUCH
ARE
39 AND 38?
LET'S SEE. I CAN DO THAT IN MY HEAD.
30 AND 30 ARE 60.
9 AND 8 ARE 17.
60 AND 17
ARE 77.

CAN ADD THEM ANOTHER WAY.
39 AND 38 ARE EACH NEARLY THE SAME AS 40. ADD 40 AND 40 AND GET 80. THEN SUBTRACT 3 FROM 80, BECAUSE 39 WAS I LESS THAN
40, AND 38 WAS 2 LESS THAN
40.
80 MINUS 3 IS 77.

I AM
CAREFUL, I CAN ADD
39 AND 38 IN MY HEAD JUST AS I WOULD WITH PENCIL AND PAPER.
8 AND 9 ARE 17.
REMEMBER
THE 7 AND CARRY THE I.
I AND 3 ARE 4 AND 3 ARE 7.
THE ANSWER 15 77.

HOW FUNNY! NOT ONE OF US ADDED THE NUMBERS THE SAME WAY. BUT WE GOT THE SAME ANSWER. I GUESS EVERYONE HAS TO USE HIS OWN SHORT- CUTS FOR THAT KIND
OF ADDING.

Provocative, scholarly and timely. Society may actually be changing our children’s brains for the worse. Quotation on the front of the cover of the book titled endangered minds: why children don’t think and what we can do about it. HELPS IN PROBLEM SOLVING
Dividing into Two Equal Parts
Ralph raises rabbits to sell. He wants to put the rabbits you see above into two different coops. He will put the same number of rabbits in each coop.
How many rabbits has Ralph in all?
How many coops has Ralph for them?
How many rabbits will there be in each coop?
How to Picture the Way Ralph Will Divide
"I will use dots to show the rabbits," said Ralph. "I will divide the rabbits into two equal groups, like this:"

A Problem about This Picture
Ralph has 12 rabbits. He wants to put them into 2 coops with the same number of rabbits in each coop.
How many rabbits will he put in each coop?
1. Think: I know how many rabbits there are in all.
To put them into 2 equal groups, I shall divide 12 by 2.
2. Work the problem on paper. Divide 12 by 2. Read the question to find out what the
