I'm at heart a statistician who loves dinosaurs. This video is what my eldritch horrors look like. "I'm just the statistics guy" - How's that an excuse? Making sure the images are real and not fake it's the first part of the analysis.

Another banger📢 This one has given me a little bit of Schadenfreude, ngl. For white supremacists, white poor people are a failure. In their stupid, melted, rotten minds, people of colour and women are naturally inferior, so poor white men have no excuse. That ad was true to their rotten truth.

The government *still* isn’t tracking how often immigration agents detain U.S. citizens. We are. 500+ Americans have been handcuffed, held at gunpoint or held against their will in Trump’s second term. Our tally is almost certainly an undercount. THREAD (content warning: violence) ⬇️

This is a Freudian slip ad. An anti-ad. "Are you a boss tired of having to do your job? Try ChatGPT so you can convince yourself that you deserve that job even when everyone else knows that for the past 10 years you haven't cared."

Is the ad saying "nobody buys videogames anymore, anyone can play their own T. rex jumps cacti game now? Or if it is "you can make your own videogame to sell", why would anyone buy it if they can also make their own?

What this ad tells me is that the intended audience is people who don't care and had offset the costs of caring to someone else. Or the add was made by people who don't care. Realistically, that videogame is ready to play in the time frame the ad portrays if it's just "rocket skip asteroids".

The slide show is hideous. Six years ago, PowerPoint had a "Smart Design" feature that worked 100x better than that. I really hope that lawyer is not a real lawyer. His job is to produce slop so that his understaffed colleagues under him do the real work.

Based on this ad for ChatGPT 6, it's clear the intended audience is people high up in a company pretending to do a job. The "rocket" is different in every iteration, which tells me this person doesn't care about the "rocket", but that there's a "rocket". youtu.be/1QNsdr-Qx_I?...

The next stage will be to code how confident taxonomists are when they make determinations, how fragmentary remains can be treated so that they are not excluded, and how whole collections can be incorporated into datasets to avoid publication bias. Let's hope 🍀🤞

Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
2. When interpreting a database, it is important to understand that an entry labelled as "Species A" came with an analytical part (species delineation) that is not coded in the database. Taxonomists code their uncertainty in paragraphs that do not make it into the datasets.

Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
The idea is to develop functions that allow extracting as much information as possible from physical specimens so that the physical and abstracted fossil records are more compatible. 1. When compiling a database, it is important to bear in mind that imperfect coding is better than no coding.

This paper is a proof of concept for a grant that I will be submitting next year to see if the patterns for the Mexican dinosaurs are seen in other basins or other bonebeds. This is still very rough around the edges.
150
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
🐾For instance, it is likely that in the places where we have only found dinosaur tracks, there are no bones to be found because they were part of transient islands where the bones would be heavily eroded or transported and dissolved in the sea.
150
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
🌊In fluvial settings, the phylogenetic informativeness of the bioclasts seems to be correlated with the type of fluvial subenvironment. The shape and taxonomic identification of the bioclasts allows confirming fine details about the evolution of the Gulf of Mexico during the Mesozoic.
140
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
🏞️The fragments may not be informative at a taxonomic/phylogenetic level, but they are informative at the deposystem level. As bioclasts, fragmentary remains have similar behaviours if their shapes are similar, and the phylogenetic informativeness is correlated with the deposystem in Mexico.
140
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
🗃️Databases are not end products; they are instruments to ask questions about our observations that we could not ask by just looking at the individual observations. The fragmentary fossil record of dinosaurs in Mexico maps very nicely onto the tectonic evolution of the Gulf of Mexico.
160
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
😶‍🌫️So, the estimator can give us an idea of potential biases and potential areas of opportunity when looking at a database for which we have no idea of what the material actually looks like.
160
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
🦕The group where this happened a lot was sauropodomorphs: there are reports of sauropodomorphs from the Early and Middle Jurassic from Mexico, just mentioned in passing, but they still have to be described, possibly because their taxonomic identity does not guarantee publication.
150
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
❓A lot of the dinosaur findings are not reported due to their perceived incompleteness. There are a lot of publications that report "other fragmentary material." And it seems that such material is yet to be catalogued (and is not counted here).
150
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
🦖Theropods have a strong correlation: the more complete, the more character coverage. For ornithischians, it is a gamble, but most of the time they are very likely to have fewer characters associated with them.
140
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
⛏️This reflects the research interest in fragments. Some bones are more common and get the chance to be used to discover characters than others. When completeness is lower than 20: Sauropodomorphs are more likely to have characters in fragmentary remains, yet are underrepresented.
140
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
🦢However, not all fragments are equal. Depending on the character list used, the potential information contained in them varies randomly. With a skeletal completeness of under 20, the likelihood of black swan events is quite high.
140
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
🧩For the Mexican fossil record, 75% of the specimens reported in the literature have a completeness of 1.7 (out of 100), and 50% of them have a completeness of under 0.6. The most complete specimen gets a 49.6 score.
140
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
🪫An occurrence with very low phylogenetic information may be removed from a dataset used in answering questions about hadrosaurs, but could be singled out to see whether it is truly uninformative, or it has been simply ignored.
140
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
⌨️The hypotheses of homology are different depending on what specimens (and their completeness) are used as reference when making character lists. The cross-product (an estimator of phylogenetic informativeness) then allows us to visualise the potential information associated with an occurrence.
140
Omar Rafael Regalado Fernández @mathchaos.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
👩‍🔬How many characters have been discovered for each region also provides an extra layer of information: what is the research effort currently invested in a group? What are the research interest biases? Can the material answer some research questions?
