I did a little @massobsarchive.bsky.social historical trip this morning to see the commemorative plaque on the front of 6 Grotes Buildings in Blackheath. Charles Madge and Kathleen Raine lived here in mid 1930s and Mass Observation was headquartered here from 1937-39 although Madge relocated (1/2)
6 Grotes Buildings, Blackheath. A large, brick house with white window frames. Close up of blue historical plaque put up by English Heritage: 'the founding headquarters of Mass-Observation a pioneering social survey. 1937- 1939'View of the house from different Perspective. There is a large tree in garden with sun shining through leaves. View across the heath which would be visible from house. Church in mid-view and another spire in distance sticking up from horizon.

Being part of the MO panel means that three times a year you will be sent what we call a 'directive'. These directives usually have three different topics in them that we ask our contributors to respond to. Topics can range from politics to what your kitchen is like. We try to keep them varied!

If you like writing, that's great! But we also really welcome applications from people who might be more comfortable sending us short responses or responses in other formats. For example, we have some people on the panel who take photographs and send these in 📸

We are nearing the end of our 12th May cataloguing and we've particularly enjoyed some of the drawings and doodles we've found amongst all the diaries!
A doodle of a stick person with their arms resting on their face with a squiggle around their head. It's captioned 'me stressing over my exams'A small section of a diary. It has a colourful line running through the page alongside which are the different activities the writer was doing. This includes looking at social media (shown by a drawing of a phone) and eating their breakfast (shown by a doodle of a pit of cereal and chia seeds)A doodle of a nowl of porridge by a seven year old. It's drawn in pencil, there is a pot then some scribbles across the top, next to it it reads 'my porridge'
