MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 24/12/2025Non-sponsored shoutout to actalis.com, an Italian SSL certificate authority with a generous free plan. I migrated to them from ZeroSSL, it took about 5 minutes of messing with my Caddy config. MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 03/10/2025It's always sad to see how little love Pine64 devices get software-wise. I dug up my PineTime from a drawer, after not using it for more than a year, hoping there would be some flashy new update or maybe an entirely new firmware, but... Nope. InfiniTime was last updated in 2024, WaspOS in 2021. 000

MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 13/07/2025and Matrix has done a good number of things right. I still have an account on a public server, and I'll be willing to try to self-host again after some time, hoping that the situation with CSAM attacks can be fixed. For now, I can only wish you good luck. 010
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 13/07/2025I know you're all trying your best with limited resources. I can't hide I'm disappointed by some things, and from my point of view, it's hard to see a future that looks bright. But I'm still rooting for you. I've been a huge fan for a while, because I do think the world needs decentralized messenger 100
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 13/07/2025I didn't mean it as "hate", the blog post is all written with a light tone in mind, so most of what you may find hateful is just performative rage. I thought it was clear, but I'll push out an update to specify it, since I didn't mean for anyone to feel offended by it. 110
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 13/07/2025I've written more about my disappointment towards the direction Matrix is going in this blog post: massive.box/blog/decentr... I did leave out the issue of CSAM storms, because it wouldn't have fit with the light tone of the rest of the post, but it's one of the reasons why I shut my server down.massive.boxThe present and future of decentralized communications platforms | MassiveBoxAnalyzing some decentralized messaging and social media platforms, why they're struggling to become mainstream, and what they can tell us about the future of the technology. 130
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 13/07/2025After New Vector dropped Dendrite, people like me, who were running their own server, have barely seen any of the "Matrix v2" improvements. With Synapse being slow and heavy, and other implementations (like Conduit) being unstable, you can see why some people aren't too fond of Matrix. 210
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 12/07/2025Any large enough ActivityPub instance could just as well be targeted by legislation like this. I've heard of ActivityPub server operators that are going to IP-block the UK rather than implementing the required verification, but that doesn't really count as censorship resistance. 164
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 07/07/2025I wanted to get them for myself, but it turns out I can't see shit and my prescription lenses would have been too thick for that kind of frame x.x 010
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 03/07/2025I'm less enthusiastic about WalletLinker. I feel like some of the discourse surrounding ATProto sounds already too close to that of cryptobros. I fear that integrating ATProto with cryptos further will draw in an undesireable audience. I hope BlueSky won't end up like Nostr. 120
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 03/07/2025I'm happy to learn about RedDwarf! I've been thinking of a project based on ATProto, but building an alternative AppView is a lot of work, and I'm glad to see that Constellation seems to handle it just fine. 140

MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 30/06/2025I'm trying to get back into blogging, this is what I came up with after a few weeks of sporadic writing. I think it came out well! 120
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 24/06/2025I'm surprised by how usable it is! It's noticeably slower than the default appview, but so far it seems to be pretty consistent, even for historical data, which is the real achievement! 030

MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 13/06/2025My PDS is acting up a bit, so I want to give a shot to one of the alternative PDS implementations. What do y'all recommend? 000
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 09/05/2025Hello from @aviva.gay's deer.social! This BlueSky client has no analytics and lots of nice features, while keeping the beautiful default client UI. I can't wait for an Android app release!deer.socialdeer.social 010
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 08/05/2025What would happen if I were to set my PDS' PDS_BSKY_APP_VIEW_URL to your AppViewLite? I've never fully understood how that works lol 030
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 02/05/2025That's a terrible idea though, your home feed is now unmanageable. You can just pin the FurryList feeds to your app, so you can still get furry content, but in a separate tab. 040
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 07/04/2025So basically you're paying the price to have the official support and to use an app which auto-updates. You could do just as well with the fork and Obtanium. It's a bit like those apps that publish for free online and paid on MS Marketplace, in a way. I mostly chose to buy to support the devs. 100
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 07/04/2025I hadn't heard of it, but it looks nice! I'm gonna have to resist the urge to try it :P The nice thing about SiYuan premium features is that since all code is FOSS, you can compile your version without the online license validation (there are several forks on GitHub like this) 100
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 06/04/2025Now I need to force myself not to try any more PKM software. It's way too easy for me to spend an infinite time focusing on the setup, without doing any actual work. To help myself with that, I chose to buy a SiYuan premium plan, so now I have some more stake in keeping using SiYuan 😅 010
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 06/04/2025Lately I've been trying out SiYuan, a PKM app like Notion, but fully FOSS. It has a couple of rough edges, but I'm liking it so much I've already migrated all my documents from Joplin to it! I've also created a freehand drawing plugin based on js-draw (the same one Joplin uses), it's fun! 200
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 12/03/2025Hosting a Forgejo server is so easy and it's a good replacement for GitHub for a good amount of use cases. Now I'm curious to try Tangled, too :) 000
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 12/03/2025Unpopular opinion: disliking GitHub should be normalized. It's an enormous point of failure, owned by a multi-billion dollar company that could decide at any point that your data isn't yours anymore, or that they're going to shut down, or whatever their investors decide. 110
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 07/03/2025The "Quiet Posters" feed solves this by giving infrequent posters their own space, that is much easier to keep track of as an user. I find myself using it more often than the Following feed! 000
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 07/03/2025I love the "Quiet Posters" feed so much, I really think it's one of the best features of BlueSky. The lack of an algorithm for the Following feed makes it so that the most active users drown out all others, but I've always found that the least active ones produce the best content. 110
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 05/02/2025More context: - I'm changing the authoritative DNS records, so it's not like I'm paying for their DNS service (which they don't offer) - The network fee appears as 0 ETH but it's actually 0.00000003 ETH, which isn't much, but it means that I can't pay it since my wallet is at 0 ETH 000
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 05/02/2025So, I won massive.box at a giveaway, and it's even worse than I had imagined. WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVE TO PAY ETHEREUM NETWORK FEES TO CHANGE THE FUCKING DNS RECORDS 100
MassiveBox @boxo.cc · 19/01/2025The best part is that ByteDance is already 60% owned by global investors (incl. large American funds) + 20% owned by their employees (including Americans), but politicians seem not to be able to understand this. newsroom.tiktok.com/en-au/the-tr... www.politifact.com/factchecks/2... 040
