To protect the health of New Yorkers, especially those at greatest risk, free KN95 masks are available at public library branches across the five boroughs. These include Brooklyn Public Library and Queens Public Library locations, as well as the following New York Public Library branches: St. George Library Center in Staten Island, the Bronx Library Center in the Bronx, and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (the main branch) in Manhattan. Emergency Management is working to expand availability at additional distribution sites and will announce further locations if air quality worsens.

Pro tip: If you are attending a rally or action, wear a N95 mask & bring extras to give to others. High quality masks can serve triple-duty: they prevent you and others from getting sick from airborne viruses, they keep your face warm in the freezing cold, & they can protect against surveillance.

“Surgical masks are to respirators what the typewriter was to the modern computer, said @adamfinkel.bsky.social, who was chief regulatory official at the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration between 1995 and 2000: “Obsolete.”’

Surgical masks are still "better than nothing", Finkel conceded, with studies suggesting they block approximately 40% of Covid-sized particles in the air, compared with approximately 80% (and up to 98%) for respirators.
He says the comparative reduction in risk can be thought of like falling off a wall of four inches rather than four feet: "You can still trip and break an ankle at four inches, but you're much better off."

Pro tip: If you are attending a crowded event in winter, wearing a well-fitting mask like an N95 can serve double duty by keeping your face warm and keeping viruses away. (yes, transmission can still happen outdoors in crowds or with close and sustained contact to someone who is sick).

It looks like HHS has shut down the long-standing program for community orgs to request large amounts of free COVID rapid tests. Our local mask bloc received this auto reply today. Horrible and a sign of the new, worse times.
