#SilentSunday Industrial sunset from a recent visit to Plymouth. @slowwaysuk.bsky.social
View past a huge cylindrical tank and other industrial stuff, across the water to the centre of Plymouth. A partly cloudy sky has a thin strip of red at its base, reflected in the river between the towers and the town.

One of the ornate gates into Piece Hall in #Halifax #Yorkshire for #ThursGate.
A highly detailed decorated gate in a high stone archway.A section of the gate to show more detail. Amongst other things it has a sheep carrying a piece of cloth, which is what Piece Hall is named for, originally being a market place for pieces of cloth.

A church door in Elland that I spotted whilst walking @slowwaysuk.bsky.social routes from Halifax to Elland to Sowerby Bridge to Hebden Bridge. #AdoorableThursday
A wide, green painted door in a stone wall, within a pointed arch. There are raised strips on the door similar to those in a church window.

Very old Fingerless #FingerpostFriday
A rusted metal post with a green, slightly wider, tall box on the top, which is very degraded by time and lichen. It is just possible to discern the words Public Footpath written vertically. In the background are fields and blue sky, with Ingleborough, one of Yorkshire's Three Peaks, on the horizon. The other side of the same post, with just a few letters visible, but I can't make out what they say.

In August this year, for 1 month, the Government made bus journeys free for children in England. Now, new figures show that the scheme enabled more than 14 million free child journeys. One bus service in the North East had 710% more child passengers than last summer. Our reaction 👇
Photo of Michael Solomon Williams with the quote, "As well as saving families money on millions of journeys, free child bus fares encouraged people to give the bus a try, inspiring a new generation of bus users. It's great to see this efficient, sustainable form of transport being given such a boost. But even with free fares, access to buses is not equal. One in seven people live in places without a decent bus service. The Government needs to do more to reconnect these transport deserts."

After a recent trip to #LincolnCathedral, I’m happy to report that the world’s oldest tennis ball is still lodged in the mouldings near the Galilee Porch. Got stuck there in 1914 when a boy called Gilbert Bell was playing catch with his brother. See alt text for full story.
Close-up of a tennis ball, blackened by time, lodged in the arch mouldings of Lincoln Cathedral. I have indicated the ball with a yellow arrow.
The story of the stuck ball became a family legend and whenever they visited Lincoln, Gilbert’s relatives would check to see it was still there.
In 2005, the story surfaced when his nephew, David, wrote to the cathedral asking (jokingly) if they could please have the ball back.
It predates the tennis ball in the museum at Wimbledon (dated 1916) and is thought to be the oldest in the world.

Happy #Flyday #BirdsInFlight #BirdOfTheDay #ECK #Birds #EurasianKingfisher
Kingfisher hovering just above the water, wings tucked back and beak pointing upward as droplets spray around its body, with its vivid turquoise-blue and orange plumage sharply in focus against a soft, natural woodland background.

A great example of what a “bird brain” can process in a split second. Barrel roll, wing and body control, trajectory, water droplets and closing the nictitating membrane, all happening in one moment.

It's a new competitor to Citylink, both run long distance intercity coach services throughout Scotland. Glasgow to Inverness £15.75, shorter journeys in the Highlands use the £2 cap. Best to buy tickets online in advance. Both excellent scenic services!

Rather than expanding Heathrow, the Government should focus on cleaner alternatives to flying by improving rail links to Europe. A frequent flyer levy and ending aviation's tax privileges would also ensure those who fly most and pollute most contribute most to decarbonisation.
