What a whirlwind: This week I’m recording “Sleep with the Angels,” an anthology of my speeches from 1992-93. There are lessons and strength to be claimed in our history. In returning to these moments, I wish to honor our shared past and carry it into the now — to create a more hopeful future. ❤️

This is my community. This is my family. Congratulations again to Project Angel Food on the expansion of their new campus! Their love and commitment to this community only grows stronger every day, and with each person who shows up to serve, nourish, and demonstrate that no one is ever forgotten.

The Walk for Peace is an act of love, perseverance, & hope. The monks remind us that we don’t walk alone in our pursuit of good. At times all we can do is put one foot in front of the other — thank you for showing us that this too is an act of courage. We will walk on & fight for peace with love.

“The only thing more powerful than hate is love” “Together we are America.” Bad Bunny said in his art and joy what we ALL needed to hear, and what we should embody ❤️

Witnessing the #WalkForPeace over these last weeks has given me a profound sense of hope. Their light illuminates the best of humanity — if they can weather the storms they’ve journeyed through, so will we.

Attending Project Angel Food’s benefit healed my heart this winter! I loved seeing these wonderful people come together to support an org that's always steadfast in its community care. A highlight was having my portrait made – in chocolate! – by the remarkable Robert Vargas!!

In case you hadn’t heard, “Uneasy Silence” is available as an audiobook on #Audible and everywhere you listen! Narrating my story out loud, in my own voice, was cathartic and deeply personal. I hope you enjoy experiencing it as much as I enjoyed creating it: amzn.to/42lmwsn

As this year ends, I’m deeply grateful — for time with friends and family, for creating “Uneasy Silence,” and for serving in community. I’m thankful for my support system & my voice that allow me to keep working for a more just, compassionate world. In the new year, may we keep choosing one another.

Thank you again, @zerlinamaxwell.bsky.social, for inviting me on your show. It's AIDS Awareness Month, and it’s crucial for us remind this generation that HIV/AIDS is still here. We must use our voices to push back against cuts to science and preventative care here and abroad.

My time with @petebuttigieg.bsky.social reignited my hope for what’s possible when we fight unapologetically for progressive change. I share Pete's belief that we must reject manufactured division, and focus on our communities’ shared needs. We’ve seen the power we have when we act together.

❤️ The Broadway community is extraordinary for so many reasons, but the Broadway Cares Red Bucket tradition is such a special moment of unity. If you attend a show this season, keep an eye out for the wonderful volunteers with the Red Buckets – and say hello for me!

Thank you ‪@msignorile.bsky.social‬ for having me on to talk about “Uneasy Silence,” and how we’ve watched — from the early days of the HIV/AIDS epidemic to now — how politics can determine who receives care, and who is left behind. We must continue speaking truth and standing together.

I’m honored to have @pelosi.house.gov's generous words grace the cover of “Uneasy Silence,” a book born of hope, art, & the belief we can all make a difference. Madam Speaker’s decades of public service & tireless commitment to equality have inspired me & so many others to keep using our voices.
The back of Mary Fisher's book, "Uneasy Silence" displays a quote from Nancy Pelosi that reads: “Mary Fisher is a woman of extraordinary courage and hope, inspiring generations of Americans from her groundbreaking speech as a person with AIDS to the 1992 Republican National Convention to her decades of work helping others with AIDS live openly and with dignity.

Mary Fisher has broken the Uneasy Silence that too many people with AIDS have had to bear. Because of Mary’s example, millions of AIDS/HIV patients are living fearlessly with compassion and activism in the face of discrimination and despair. Reading her inspiring words teaches all of us that each of us can make a difference.” -Nancy Pelosi, former Speaker of the House of Representatives

The cover is black with white text and also includes a quote that reads, “Mary Fisher has inspired millions of people with the quiet power of her art and her words. In Uneasy Silence, she does it again, bearing eloquent witness to cries for justice and compassion.” -Darren Walker, President, the Ford Foundation

Below these quotes is a headshot of Mary, smiling at the camera with her arms crossed, and her bio, which is only partially visible from the cropping of the photo.

Deeply grateful to the Congregational Church of the Peninsula for hearing my sermon this past weekend. The story of Hagar and El Roi reminds us to see those who feel unseen. THIS congregation truly lives that message. Listen to the full service here ⬇️ bit.ly/480ppBT

When I saw Just in Time on Broadway, I never expected to share such a beautiful moment with Jonathan Groff after the show! I was already blown away by his extraordinary performance, but what moved me the most was experiencing the love he has for his community.

Thank you so much KGAY 106.5 & 92.1 for having me on to share a piece of my history, and history shared by everyone who has lived with HIV/AIDS. My hope has always been for no one to carry the weight of stigma, and that everyone knows there is community, family, and love waiting to hold them.

I was honored to keynote the HARP-PS Positively Aging Project Conference 2025. We are a community that knows the gift of aging — defined not only by loss, but by purpose too. We’ve survived, but the epidemic isn’t over. We must keep bearing witness, honoring the lessons, and serving where we can.

Helping bring “Nourishing The Community” to life beside its creator, Robert Vargas, was a profoundly meaningful experience. This mural reflects all that Project Angel Food represents: community, compassion, and limitless love. I'm so honored to have added my brush stroke to this work of heart.

August 19 was the anniversary of my speech, “A Whisper of AIDS,” and #WorldHumanitarianDay. Both call on us to speak against injustice, act where you can, and serve others — even when the obstacles feel insurmountable. Thank you Spectrum SoCal for helping me share this message. #ActForHumanity

Thankful to @windycitytimes.com for this interview on the anniversary of my '92 speech. The deadly ignorance then echoes today in dissonance around HIV/AIDS, COVID, & medical science. With compassion & unity, we can protect each other, honor those lost, & keep fighting for justice. bit.ly/MF_WCT

33 years ago today I spoke at the RNC, urging the nation to confront prejudice, break the silence on HIV/AIDS, and save lives. I'm grateful to all who’ve joined me in the journey since and raised their voices for justice & dignity — reminding me that change is possible, and we are not alone.

Cynthia Erivo was absolutely brilliant in Jesus Christ Superstar. The presentation was amazing and otherworldly – it truly brought tears to my eyes. I saw it for the first time in the 70s and the message of the show is still relevant today.

Those who censor artists seek to silence truth & resistance – something I have experienced first-hand. Amy Sherald’s bold stance against the Smithsonian’s censorship of her work is an inspiration. When we defend our artistic freedom, we defend our democracy. maryfisher.substack.com/p/may-i-just...

I’ve recently rediscovered the joy of working with pastels. Art has always been a form of meditation for me; sometimes it offers a reprieve, sometimes clarity. Whatever medium you use to create moments of peace, make space for it. Rest is not surrender — it renews our strength to keep going.

To anyone in a community who no longer accepts them, I know what it’s like to stand alone, to speak alone. To realize the people you once called your own are not who you believed them to be. But hear this: even if you feel alone, you are not. Stand in your truth. There is family to be found.
Mary Fisher sits at a kitchen table immersed in conversation with Heather Cox Richardson. On the table are a collection of books they are likely discussing, as well as a couple of wine glasses.Heather Cox Richardson sits at the end of a wooden kitchen table, speaking to Raashan Ahmad from Vital Spaces, and another woman. Behind them are tall glass windows and a large fiddle leaf plant. Mary Fisher and Heather Cox Richardson stand side by side smiling at the camera in a kitchen with white stone walls and a large fiddle leaf tree behind them.

“I’m not yours to silence. I never was.”  I’m moved by Rosie’s fierce courage in standing up for herself and others. She has always known how to speak her truth, and this one is a powerful message that I know will give many the strength to use their voices too. #BeARosie

I fully agree with Cardinal Robert McElroy that Trump’s immigration brutalities are inhumane & morally repugnant. Those whose lives are being shattered are human, not abstract objects, and are being sacrificed on the altar of political & economic campaigns. maryfisher.substack.com/p/may-i-just...
A preview of Mary Fisher’s substack article reads: May I just say that Cardinal McElroy has it just right?

I’ve been honored by invitations to preach in congregations of the Baptist, Catholic, Methodist, Presbyterian, African Episcopal, Unitarian, Lutheran, Jewish and assorted other faith traditions.

But if I were Catholic, this week I’d be grateful and proud of the hierarchy I sometimes question: grateful, because an Archbishop bore witness to the truth and proud because the truth is being muffled by much of America’s media.

According to a recent CNN report (July 9, 2025), Cardinal Robert McElroy, the Archbishop of Washington DC, spoke his mind (and his faith) plainly when he said of Trump’s immigration brutalities, “This is simply not only incompatible with Catholic teaching, it’s inhumane and is morally repugnant.”
