During the WiiDS era it was common that a publisher would release a casual title with a big audience, a darts game say, and make mad bank. They release a sequel, and it sells like shit. Turns out the audience who buy Darts 1 have their needs met and don't want Darts 2, since they have darts already.

Alien Syndrome released on basically every platform in existence, then disappeared for years before reemerging with a then-modern reimagining. It's a wonderful example of how different hardware and developers used to mean fairly different versions of the same game.

Marketing graphic for Nintendo Streetpass on the 3DS. It shows white stick figures going about their days and the two in the middle are walking away from each other, one has a tote bag the other a briefcase. It shows 3DSes in their bags and green arrows forming a circle between the people. At the bottom is two 3DSes doing a wireless communication thing between them.

In around 1999 a Japanese person in a park in London told me I should listen to Luna Sea, because they were 'The Japanese Smashing Pumpkins'. I ended up getting the 98' album Storm, so their prior one, Style was #missedin96. Style was apparently Luna Sea's brake out ...

#missedin86 Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet has a bunch of their classics, including the best Bruce Springsteen song, Livin' On a Prayer, and honestly there's only one or two weak tracks on this, and even they are fairly straight ahead hair metal blasts. Really like the outro pairing.

Martyn Maillardet @martynem.bsky.social · 24/08/2026

#missedin86 I had no idea that Nick Cave's Kicking Against the Pricks was a cover album. I like the Hammer Song from Nick's Greatest Hits, but it sounds so much like an original that I never knew otherwise. Honestly, that's the deal with this whole album. Bonus: All Tomorrow's Parties without Nico.

I've been trying to listen to albums that came out in 1986 and 1996 and either I missed them or they feel important to the then-zeitgeist and are out of my wheelhouse. I'm trying to do it chronologically, but I fell behind with 96 because about 10x as many albums released in 96 it seems.

I've said it before, but Will Trent is a really peculiarly good TV show; it's got a specifically humorous-but-serious tone, a great, diverse ensemble, is much more character driven than procedural and has a really nuanced take on being competent and functional with hella mental health shit goin' on.

Asian action genres like tokusatsu, kaiju, martial arts are seen as "cheap" "low budget" genres (they are)! But even a multibillion company falters at "doing it themselves" because what enables these productions isn't a quantifiable resource you can put on an Excel spreadsheet, but "skill" & "craft"
