Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 01/09/2026Listening to Jess Gillam interviewing Gerald Finley. They’re talking about saxophonist Stan Getz and it’s fascinating to listen to two master musicians unpacking and describing Getz’s ability to convey so much humanity in his playing with such constraint. www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...bbc.co.ukThis Classical Life - Jess Gillam with... Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 31/07/2026This reminds me of a records survey I once did in a lighthouse. Boxes of records on the dining table, amongst plates of lasagne, a dog and cat wandering around and a couple of chain smokers, one with a beard stained yellow from the nicotine, sat at the table. 010
Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 23/07/2026They’re currently a duo, but they were a trio for a long time. Superb singers and very good live. 010
Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 20/07/2026Went to Folk by the Oak yesterday. Was great fun, though I feel like a sun-dried tomato today. The fireworks were brief. 020
Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 13/07/2026I naively thought a benefit of being freelance would be a day or two per week/month doing this kind of stuff. Needless to say it is not. 010
Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 13/07/2026It’s such an oddly delightful film. I shall miss Sam Neill very much. 010
Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 13/07/2026I am at an academic conference for the first time in a while. We’re still in the first session despite coffee break being finished now 10 minutes ago and the second session should have started by now. Why am I still surprised by the appalling time-keeping of academics? 030

Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 19/06/2026I don’t think I could do a whole week of onsite work anymore, the commute would kill me. That said, I do a lot more driving to work these days. 000

Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 03/06/2026They do! I love a chaotic site survey! The first I ever experienced, a warehouse where the contents of a merchant bank had been piled. Fireplaces, furniture and records. I remember my boss clambering up shelves pulling out ledgers and muttering incantations like ‘articles and memoranda’! 000

Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 31/05/2026The weekend has been busy. Major treat in bagging 2nd row tickets for The Tempest at Stratford. Hugely enjoyable with a strong cast and production. Today was for the rugby, which was enjoyable even in defeat, even with a brass quartet. 040

Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 08/05/2026Yep. Wide awake at 4:00am, lying in bed thinking clearly about the work day ahead and what I need to do. Cut to 7:30am and I’m knackered, dozing off and barely able to drag myself out of bed. 000
Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 08/05/2026You’re the living embodiment of the 7 Ps, Helen. Always appreciated that, but it’s definitely time to go and have a weekend!! 010

Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 25/04/2026A few months ago I finished a project to archive the records of a charity. To celebrate, the team went on a day out to throw some pottery. Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 25/04/202630+ years ago, when I was an English Lit undergrad, I was very envious of a fellow student who had one of those Toshiba Tecras with a colour screen. I was still writing my assignments by hand. I never appreciated how heavy it must’ve been to lug about. How times have changed! 110
Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 24/04/2026It’s that brief moment when, if you squint hard enough, you can see the last thing on your to-do list, right before a truck load of other people’s problems get in the way. 000

Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 15/02/2026New German appliances in our kitchen. The fridge beeps if the door is left open, the washing machine beeps every minute after a cycle if you don’t open the door and the induction hob beeps whenever it detects moisture spat from a bubbling pan. All very stress inducing. 030
Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 15/02/2026They’re fab! I had my first ever go on a potters wheel a few weeks ago and loved it. 110

Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 16/01/2026Thought of an idea for a new reality tv competition. We’ve had tatooists, make-up artists, sewing and painting. How about finding the best amateur male grooming practitioner? We could call it ‘Manscape Artist of the Year’, hosted by Stephen Mangan. 040
Martin Devereux @martydev.bsky.social · 16/01/2026Sometimes, being a freelancer can be tough, especially this time of year. Today, though, has been a good one. Current projects still excite and a new client brings new challenges and new rewards. A good way to end the week. 090
