Social Security doesn’t add to the deficit. It’s a pay-as-you-go program, which means the dollars paid in in any given year are the dollars that go out. The surplus intentionally built up since 1982 is being depleted sooner than they thought because of income inequality.

SSA staff and administrative law judges cut the time to issue a disability appeal to a 25-year best by the end of the Biden administration. But now that Trump and his part-time Commissioner have cut staffing to a 63-year low, the time to issue a decision is climbing back up again.

Beginning in June 2024, the highly trained SSA staff began bringing down the deadly Initial Disability decision backlog. But Trump and his part-time Commissioner have cut staffing to a 60-year low, and untrained workers are encouraged to deny appeals in 30 days to boost metrics.

SSA employees drove the 1-800 # wait times down from an average of 45 minutes down to 12.5 minutes in 2024 — before Trump and his part-time Commissioner cut staffing to a 63-year low. A recorded message is not an answer. Stop fudging the numbers and restore the devastating cuts to staffing.
