This is what I get, about the consultancy where I used to work. Also with follow-ups sometimes. Fortunately Gmail has learned to route them straight into the spam folder.

Since we’re talking about the EU’s Multiannual Financial Framework again, now is as good a time as any to remind everyone what it says about the EU’s own resources in art. 311 TFEU. (It says that that’s basically how the EU is meant to be funded.)

The exact phrase he used was an “outer rim around Europe”, which would include both the UK and Canada. (And potentially others.)

We have no way of knowing how many of the lawsuits Rowling threatened to fund had any merit. But on the topic of anti-SLAPP statutes, they typically allow for even non-frivolous lawsuits to be dismissed. Eg the bill currently before the UK House of Lords:

The odd thing is that that's the problem that choosing Sir Keir Starmer was supposed to fix. Labour went with someone who had an impressive career outside of politics. Now they're back to this:

Not to be cynical, but that sounds like a highly successful SLAPP to me.
On Tuesday, the Charity Commission opened a compliance case into Amnesty International UK. This followed Amnesty’s self-referral to the Commission following the significant backlash it received for a now-withdrawn report published on its website. That report had sparked controversy for labelling over one-hundred gender critical organisations as being part of an ‘Anti-Rights Movement’.

One such organisation listed by the Amnesty International UK in the report was Beira’s Place – a female-only sexual violence support centre founded by JK Rowling in 2022. Following the publishing of the report, Beira’s Place threatened to take legal action against Amnesty, alleging the report to have been defamatory and demanding a retraction and apology. JK Rowling herself then offered legal funding to any groups that had been named by Amnesty in the report.

Amnesty swiftly withdrew the report, explaining that it had failed to go ‘through the established internal review processes that are in place to ensure consistency, accuracy and alignment with Amnesty International UK’s position.’ It has added that it is ‘engaging fully’ with the Charity Commission’s investigation.

Yesterday was the 15th anniversary of the day when I splurged and bought a 1st class ticket to go from Florence to Pisa airport, only to discover that Trenitalia had forgotten to attach a 1st class carriage. As you can see, all the 1st class passengers could claim the price difference back. 😇

However much I am told that the UK doesn’t have a presidential system, I can’t help but notice that the highlighted bit is pretty much verbatim what American conservatives say when they explain why their president must be able to hire and fire officials without restrictions.

Just like it’s worth remembering that words are elastic. When people talk about “all men”, they rarely mean literally everyone. That is as true today, of all days, as it was 250 years ago.

My favourite bit from the King's Speech so far is that the government proposes to "clarify" the CMA's jurisdictional rules. At least we know that IBM approves of the idea that fewer of its acquisitions should be investigated by the CMA, and that it should be easier to lobby against the CMA.

Laten we eens iets anders proberen.

The pointlessness of (Schengen non-compliant) border checks illustrated. I’m on the motorway queuing before the German border checks (15 minutes delay). That white car can just drive across the border without ever seeing a customs officer.

In E&W this came up Pal v Commissioner of the Police for the Metropolis (2018). Relying on the Supreme Court in SXH v Crown Prosecution Service (2017) the Court of Appeal was not keen, but it was not willing to rule out this argument either. (But held against dr. Pal.) www.bailii.org/ew/cases/EWH...

I think this is something that a Chief Constable ought to take legal advice on (and presumably does). I see no indication in the Human Rights Act that police forces are not covered. Here is a quote from Nemtsov v. Russia (2014). www.bailii.org/eu/cases/ECH...
