New research has rewritten a key chapter in Irish prehistory, revealing that bones long thought to mark the beginning of farming in Ireland belong to bear and wild boar, not cattle. Read more on @news.rte.ie: www.rte.ie/news/munster... @ucddublin.bsky.social @ucc.ie

... And thanks to a mighty push way beyond office hours (and in a soft weather) with Conor McDermott @ucdarchaeology.bsky.social, the final micromorph block was lifted. Chinwag and chocolate might have been had for a wee bit, but sure what you do, plaster was setting... 2/2

Ferriter's Cove FINAL day. While Deborah @naikaiouk.bsky.social was sternly but patiently teaching the basics of recording to promising novice @graemewarren.bsky.social, Maighread staked out the last cores - this very one right under our pile of gear. Classic. 1/2

Visit from Gabriel Cooney and @aidanosullivan.bsky.social today - here being shown around by Deborah @naikaiouk.bsky.social . And traditional last day recording! Five eroding sections of (presumably) Final Mesolithic archaeology cleaned, sampled and recorded. Now back to Dublin and some analysis...

Also rounded pebble, clearly part of a cultural deposit of shells. Not sure why! And @martinmoucheron.bsky.social removing more block samples.

Ferriter's Cove 26: More large rhyolite flakes and core fragments, all with lots of charcoal at the base of a very bioturbated occupation soil

Day 5 in Ferriter's Cove. Deborah Nagle @naikaiouk.bsky.social delivering her very first soil micromorph baby. Very steady pair of hands. In the end there were two of them to capture the whole sequence - you could call them twins, I suppose. @graemewarren.bsky.social is the godfather of course.

Then Billy enraptured the sizeable crowd as Gaeilge with a fantastic array of objects and food to bring the Mesolithic to life. Thanks Caitríona and West Kerry Museum, we gave it all for this Heritage Week event in partnership with IAI @iaiarchaeo.bsky.social. Go raibh maith agaibh!

There's always something happening in Ferriter's Cove. Today Kate defeated the final boss - North Field Pt1 - before leaving. With Pt2 in the bag before lunch that's a mag wrap for the project!

Ferriter's Cove - Day 4: not a bad view from site today... And the slow excavation of our first artefact, a rather large rhyolite flake. (2cm sticking out of the section turns into this!)

Then @graemewarren.bsky.social, Deborah Nagle @naikaiouk.bsky.social and Jo Brück hurt the stratigraphy so much it had to be bandaged. 2/2

Day 3 at Ferriter's Cove. Before my phone got conscripted to keep the GPS churning: Kate bowing to the Magnetic Lord (or clipping herself to the battery harness... which is pretty much the same) HAIL TO THE MAGNETIC LORD! (Great job Kate and Freddy!) 1/2

Day 3: a visit from colleagues @nationalmons.bsky.social. Great discussion about the site, research and how to manage loss. Also joined by eminent colleagues escaping the Bronze Age! Sampling proceeding apace, including @martinmoucheron.bsky.social block samples for microstratigraphic analysis.

More cleaning, recoding and sampling at Ferriter's Cove w/ @martinmoucheron.bsky.social : shell layers, charcoal - and loads of really good questions about site formation to be answered (hopefully!) by our samples... Tx to @ucdarchaeology.bsky.social @researchireland.ie @nationalmons.bsky.social

A fine first day of fieldwork at Ferriter's Cove with @martinmoucheron.bsky.social and colleagues. Cleaning and recording eroding sections with (presumably Final Mesolithic) shell layers, ahead of sampling tomorrow. 1/2

Maighread (left) & Andy are not small. They're far away. Quite the big field to survey with Ground-Penetrating Radar... Thanks to @researchireland.ie for their financial support, and to our own UCD School of Civil Engineering for their collaboration. 2/2

First day in the field at Ferriter's Cove. While @graemewarren.bsky.social and colleagues clean and record eroding sections, we turn on our machines to try and sense signs of human presence 6000 years old. Bustin' makes me feel good. 1/2

I swear it wasn't planned: leaving today for some fieldwork in Ferriter's Cove, and this dropped. Many thanks to @researchireland.ie for supporting my postdoc, to @graemewarren.bsky.social for mentoring me, and to all the nice people who took part in poking at those bits of bone.
