Anand is the best (and I'm doing an event with him at, yes, @cityartssf.bsky.social Thursday, for his new book Man in the Mirror). Couldn't agree more that cities are refuges or places of last resort for people kicked out of rural/suburban/pseudo-idyllic America.

And SB's insistence that she isn't English (for whatever reason) isn't anything like the gotcha she seems to think it is either. Her self-proclaimed un-Englishness is the kind of mindset that many little Englanders feel is why such people should be "sent home".

For a start, if it all depends on your personal feeling of kinship with your fellow countrymen/women, I have to confess to not feeling particularly English a lot of the time because the idea of "Englishness" has been appropriated by a particular breed of white men.

Martin Talbot @martinlt.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
It seems that SB's perception of this is a very personal one, about her own feelings of her own Englishness. This is entirely her prerogative, but isn't particularly useful more broadly at all.

What a glorious gift today. Four unreleased tracks from the greatest album of the Seventies, maybe of all. Begs the question, what other riches are locked away from Stevie's unparalleled creative period? Until the answer comes though, what a joy... 😍 open.spotify.com/album/7gzJYO...

The vast access to huge volumes of all music today is, in part, why music is not as tribal anymore. Young people today are more musically literate and open minded than any generation before them, because their tastes are not as shaped / limited by access.

I often think of my introduction to Bowie. My imagination was piqued after my dad bought Scary Monsters in 1980, but the only other Bowie album I was familiar with for years was Ziggy, because it was the only album I could find in our local newsagent/record shop. No such problems today.

Martin Talbot @martinlt.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
V much agree on this. I can still count a good dozen albums/artists who I have continued to love from pre-1970, because my dad owned them - Sgt Pepper, Monk, CS&N, Brubeck, Miles etc. Seems impossible today, but exploring the classics was so difficult in the 70s, they were just not accessible.

Also anecdotal - there is a possibility that John Lennon's death was the beginning of a different attitude to old music, but the emergence of "catalogue" (driven in the Eighties by the CD and the 90s, 00s & 10s by digital music) was also very important. Availability was v limited before that.

PS. We saw a 35mm Curzon screening. (We're seeing it in IMAX in a month's time.) What Nolan has achieved given the limitations of the technology is mind-boggling. Genuinely can't believe how he delivered certain shots. All in all, a magnificent film.

Saw it today. Brilliant film. Watch it sweep awards season. Nolan's achievement in telling such a complex story in such an accessible way is extraordinary. Of course, more Samantha Morton/Elliot Page, and less Anne Hathaway would have been better. At almost 3 hours, it is a perfect length.

Btw, the singles market is now approaching 99.9% streaming. Streaming IS the singles market.
111
Martin Talbot @martinlt.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
Think of a singles purchase as an advance on 100 future listens/streams - historically the chart counted that advance at one moment of purchase; in 2026 we count those listens ongoing (assuming you even reach 100 plays). So the purchase of yesteryear is now essentially stretched out over weeks.
110
Martin Talbot @martinlt.bsky.social · 11/07/2026
Quite simply, streaming is the predominant consumption mechanism for music in 2026, it has to be considered or the vast majority of music consumption would be being ignored. Streaming is an ongoing consumption model however. As a result, movement in the singles charts has slowed.

Martin Talbot @martinlt.bsky.social · 11/07/2026

Social media (broadly US owned) pipes US-centric news relentlessly into our timelines, traditional media follows this agenda too. Which is why the BBC remains so important to our national interest.
