He wants the subsidies to be redirected to ‘green gas’ which he is heavily invested in But it’s totally unsustainable There’s isn’t enough land in the UK to source it

Of course. Why wouldn’t I? Why does it have to be black and white. Why do we have to pit one group against the other here in the UK?

Nobody was asking to placate the Daily Hate Mail, just that we could find language that didn’t trigger fear in many Jewish people, and that kept the party united around its very pro-Palestine stance

The Green Party doesn’t need to take a position on the ultimate solution - that is up those who live there to agree. Our support for Palestinians and condemnation of Israel’s violence has definitely shifted the needle in UK politics, but the poor wording and framing of this motion could reverse that

It is disappointing, but lots of people are feeling hurt right now and I think we need to acknowledge that and address it The ZiR motion has taken a party that was united in our condemnation of Israel’s violence, and divided it deeply. That’s a real shame and is something we should address

Me too. Not a bad result, but suggests a period of consolidation and reorganising for us

Ah, OK now we’re seeing your real position You agree with the anti-trans stance. Fine, we can stop discussing it You’re scenario is nonsense, but live in it if you want

It’s more than a view, it’s the lived reality in this country and many others You’ve gone from pretending Labour haven’t done this, to dismissing the fair treatment of trans people altogether

But coalescing the progressive vote around the Greens, plus pulling in some disaffected Labour voters in the middle of Burnham’s honeymoon, is exactly what the Greens need to do to succeed

Martin Farley 🔰 @martinfarley.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Well done. It shows the momentum is still with us, despite the Burnham honeymoon. On top of a huge swing to us in Brighton (Queen’s Park), it shows that in key Labour/Green areas we are still pulling in large numbers of progressive voters

The solution is to stick with the same position of the last 40’years, which is to just let trans people live their lives in peace Let them use the toilets of their new sex/gender It never bothered anyone until about 8 years ago, and it works fine in dozens of other countries

And since when is “something could be legally challenged” news? Literally anything could be legally challenged, at any time. It’s just throwing mud in the hope that it looks like shit

Martin Farley 🔰 @martinfarley.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
No, but the point is that they shouldn’t have to The Burnham govt has deliberately made life impossible for trans people and service providers.

See ‘double exclusion’ section in the govt’s own impact assessment (about half way down) So they knew this was the effect of the guidance and published it anyway www.gov.uk/government/p...

The guidelines are an absolute mess, but they allow for trans people to be excluded from all single sex spaces

Martin Farley 🔰 @martinfarley.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
It also says they can be excluded from the spaces assigned to their ‘biological sex’ (sex assigned at birth) Which means they can be excluded from everywhere

It’s predicated on this idea that trans people are somehow a problem for everyone else that needs to be solved by simply shutting them out

Martin Farley 🔰 @martinfarley.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Have you just landed from space? It excludes trans people from using any single sex public toilets, and allows for their exclusion by many other service providers A trans man can be denied entry to the men’s bathroom, and the women’s bathroom. Meaning he has to find a neutral space or shit himself

…taking climate change seriously). He refused to cap political party donations, (despite saying he would support it just weeks before). He has promised a massive expansion of council house building, but has only allowed funding for about 30,000 more homes per year (0.1% of the total housing stock)

That’s a nuance that the motion completely failed to get across, and is something that will now endlessly detract from the Green Party’s otherwise excellent work on this issue. The whole thing has been very clumsy and politically inept, to say the least

Martin Farley 🔰 @martinfarley.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
But it’s not relevant to my point, which is the thing you were responding to when you referred to it I acknowledge your point that his rhetoric is more positive, but it’s not matched by his actions

Martin Farley 🔰 @martinfarley.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
No, but not sure why that’s relevant to this discussion He has articulated a lot of distant aspiration, but set out very little short term change We still have a pro-austerity, neoliberal, anti-trans, anti-immigrant government

Martin Farley 🔰 @martinfarley.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I don’t expect it to be fixed in a few months, I just expect his actions to match his words The effect won’t be felt for a long time, but the changes need to implemented much sooner. And I’m not seeing that happening

I’m happy with this change. Nuclear power has its challenges, and its pollution, but the reality is that it is v low carbon, and generally extremely safe compared to other forms of power generation It can be slow to set up and expensive to run, but it can be used to decarbonise energy effectively

Martin Farley 🔰 @martinfarley.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Me three. Even if you agree with it, it’s just bad policy We can’t implement it, and even if we could we really wouldn’t want to

Having spent many years supporting sensible policy motions that nobody gave a shit about or reported, I’d rather spook a few people and gain the opportunity to discuss policy in public The end result was a sound policy that will work well in practice. The Zionism is Racism policy is not that

He’s good on warm rhetoric, but the reality is that he’s not committed to the real world changes to make any of it actually happen (and in some ways has done the opposite) I suspect people will be bitterly disappointed within a few months

Abolish Landlords was simply a slogan that incorporated a bunch of measures to move the housing market away from speculation and towards much greater social provision Not the same thing at all

GPEW’s policy process and conference structures have not been fit for purpose for years. I stopped going to plenary about 6 years ago - it was just too excruciating The problem is that every alternative has been opposed and the leadership haven’t been interested

What a strange article. He asked a very specific local question and she didn’t have all the information So what? She a local Sussex and national politician. Why should she know everything that’s going on in every local authority?

The policy making needs a more robust process so that the motions that are voted on make sense and are coherent

They’ll never introduce PR His ‘electoral reform’ commitment is a continuation of FPTP, but with AV/SV to ensure each MP has majority support in their seat That’s why they never say PR or even ‘fair votes’

I totally agree that it needs to run along side an active decommissioning programme for polluters and modal shift for travel, heating and industry I’m happy that can happily coexist with my wider point about investment

An example of this is “ending the triple lock to provide a national care service” The pensions change won’t deliver any revenue until after 2030, and will not raise anywhere near enough to pay for a National Care Service even by 2040 Is that really tackling the care challenge?

Andy Burnham has such huge Nick Clegg energy, I’m genuinely amazed that so many people seem to be falling for it Warm rhetoric to keep key supporter groups happy means nowt if they’re still following the same economic policies I’m expecting massive disappointment and anger to land in ~6 months

This makes sense Something which is a fundamental right (democratic representation) shouldn’t be gifted, or taken away, by a popular vote Its why I always felt uncomfortable with the Irish referendum on same-sex marriage

@greenparty.org.uk beware! Labour is moving towards preferential voting that will shore up their position in the duopoly They don’t want fair voting, so let’s not fall into their trap ‘Electoral reform’ does not equal PR

It produces even less proportionate parliaments than our current FPTP Labour is full of extremists. Would your plan keep them out? (No, of course, but it would keep out smaller parties that threaten Labour’s position in the duopoly, which is why Labour like this idea)

Sure, but sustainable options usually need to be built, or additional investment is required So to get to sustainability, we need a huge amount of investment imho

We have private pensions, but they don’t appear in the UK figures in your chart (while higher private contributions appear in most of those European figures)

Martin Farley 🔰 @martinfarley.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I’m not being dishonest. It’s a shame you reach straight for that The UK pensions system works differently. The problem is not that the state pension is less, but that the system is more unequal Further redistribution is needed, but it’s misleading to compare it with other countries in this way

Martin Farley 🔰 @martinfarley.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
I accept all of that I wasn’t arguing against having a higher state pension, just that the UK situation is more complex than others. The problem is not that it’s less than other European countries, but that’s it’s much more unequal
