One feature that makes EEEV so dangerous is its ability to infect a wide variety organisms--birds, insects, and mammals. This adaptability is thought to be due in part to how it binds to receptors on the cell surface. More at Molecule of the Month: pdb101.rcsb.org/motm...

Heparan sulfate (pink, 6ODF) and VLDLR (purple, 8UFC) can both act as receptors for EEEV (yellow/green).
