iiinova — where your digital self keeps evolving

I see the way the light is. I think, "rainbow." I look, and there the rainbow is. I didn't grow up seeing a lot of rainbows. I've never studied or been particularly interested in rainbows. But here it is. A strange gift that isn't mine to question.

There's a certain light quality I sometimes see out my livingroom window when a storm is rolling through, and I know that it means there's a rainbow in a specific spot. I didn't develop this noticing over time and trial and error; it came to me suddenly one day, a perfect, 100% correct guess rate.

But I ultimately wish higher education in the humanities was free in Canada. I think it would do an incredible service to our country and pay dividends in a generation or even less. Other countries have figured out how to foster this universal public good. I wish we would.

Was it worth the price? There were parts of my education and student experience I am eternally grateful for. It shaped me and granted me knowledge and skills I would feel the lack of, had I not done it. It has opened and keeps open some wonderful doors...

Today I paid off the last of my student loan, which I began repaying in 2012. It, with the ~$10k in pure interest it accrued prior to the federal cancellation of student loan interest, were a considerable millstone on the neck of a young person from a working-class background. I am glad to be done.

There should be an Earth for people who don't hate all living things

Letting go and trusting the audience is hard but essential. I think an underestimated part of mastering any creative craft is coming to believe in your capacity to present something the audience can connect with in any number of meaningful ways.

I think there's a tendency to get anxious as a creator about making sure the audience walks away with the 'correct' interpretation, or knows 'for sure' what every character is feeling. Not to mention pandering to shorter attention spans, distractions, warding off bad-faith interpretations.

(Or maybe we just get real pissed off at that imaginary granddaughter for years.)

Their example, that moment in Kiki's Delivery Service when she helps the old ladies bake a herring pie that she delivers, through the rain, to a granddaughter who turns out to be ungrateful, shows us that space in action. Almost no words, just images, and we process with Kiki in our own ways.

Saw a post on Insta this morning reminding me that the best writers, directors, and other creatives remember to let the audience have their own feelings in their own time. If we rush to explain what we think they're 'supposed' to feel, we quash authenticity.

Also seeking an amazing blazer, a perfect sweater, a gay little neckerchief thing, and warm weather wear that doesn't make me look like a camp counselor from the 90s (though I will definitely choose that outfit from time to time)

Nice! Also, afaik, Pern did do the linked dragon thing 'first' (at the very least, early and loud), but I wasn't alive then so I can't verify for sure. That was certainly my impression growing up.
