maroider @maroider.net · 01/08/2026There's the mrustc compiler, which is written in C++. It usually lags behind some number of versions, but it lets you skip to a modern part of the Rust bootstrap chain instead of having to bootstrap from the original OCaml-based compiler. And then there's gccrs, but I have no clue how that's going. 030
Reposted by maroiderScooty @scottlanoue.com · 01/08/2026Happy Friday! I've been building towards an "Atmosphere OS", where my atproto account is the identity layer on a real phone. I wrote a little bit about it here:scott.leaflet.pubOn an Atmosphere OSWhat if an Atmosphere account could handle email, groupware, and device-level identity without putting Google or Apple at the center? 917738
maroider @maroider.net · 31/07/2026It doesn't have to be closed source for it to be possible. A "trusting trust" attack could "technically" be possible, but it's highly unlikely. Diverse double-compiling can apparently defeat it anyhow. The screenshotted post might as well be bait. 240

maroider @maroider.net · 30/05/2026In conclusion, even if benders had to obey the laws of thermodynamics, they could get away with being the moral equivalent of heat pumps, imo (just ignore how I didn't justify how this work for fire benders specifically :p ). (3/3) 120
maroider @maroider.net · 30/05/2026So, my take-away is that bending lends power from some greater external force. I think this is further corroborated by how water benders can't bend for a bit during "The Siege of the North, Part 2" when the moon gets murdered. (2/3) 210
maroider @maroider.net · 30/05/2026I don't take much issue with it. I think the show is pretty clear about how bending is a spiritual thing, as evidenced by how the air nomads were benders to a fault, because their society is all being monks and stuff (I'm too dumb to formulate it better). maroider @maroider.net · 28/03/2026Do you have any examples of such techniques? I've been having idle thoughts on the topic myself, and I'd love to read some prior art. 100

maroider @maroider.net · 19/01/2026It was a fun talk to watch. It's exactly in the intersection if things I'd like to know about eventually, things that seem to be poorly documented, and things I'm not in a hurry to figure out on my own. 140

maroider @maroider.net · 08/10/2025No worries. I would still say that the extra required import is awkward and it can hurt discoverability. I'm not entirely sold on this particular RFC's proposed solution, but I still think it's valuable to attach non-overridable methods to a trait in some form. 010
maroider @maroider.net · 08/10/2025`impl<T: Trait> T {}` isn't valid Rust. What the RFC refers to as an existing alternative is extension traits, which would be `impl<T: Trait> ExtTrait for T {}`. `impl dyn Trait` also only works on trait objects which is awkward. 120
