Reckless driving is routine out there.

I would love to see ANY PARKING ENFORCEMENT AT ALL on sidewalks.

Tens of thousands of protestors are facing off against tens of thousands of police in the capital of India, as they demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner who has illegally deleted millions of people from India's electoral rolls. Biggest democracy story on the planet, not in BSky.

In the State of New York, that's a felony. What is stopping the prosecutors here from filing charges?

For just a moment I really did think that this had something to do with a 6-bit IP subnet.
Screen shot from "ideastream public media" showing a slogan "Listen. Engage. Vote. /26" with the "/26" circled by me in red.

Yesterday I had lunch with someone on the other side and he just stopped talking when I failed to agree with him.

Okay but weirdly if I say the same thing, out loud, with my voice, it's fine. It's the failure to process words on a page or a screen.

Adults doing this. "If you don't do D, you won't get E." They do D and expect E. No, that's not what I wrote honey.

I'm seeing a lot of failure to break through even slightly complex logic, like I'm writing "If A is true and you also do B, then C is assured." And they're disappointed to find that C didn't happen by itself.

This idea that *knowing what's going on* is a burden that people need to be relieved of.

RTA has like a million of its own cops, but I'm still stuck behind a pickup truck in the bus lane.

This one time I was out with about eight friends standing around Broadway and the low 60s (in Cleveland) holding up hand-lettered anti-racism signs. We got two plainclothes cops in a plainclothes car, plus a helicopter. They sent the goddamn helicopter.

Yeah it's really made for the "Louise Wilson" scenario, in which the President is still alive but not even nominally conscious.

Because property taxes are much too low. If you can afford to hold onto vacant land or an empty storefront, your taxes are too low.

I would be very interested in stats on boutique businesses, in particular how many are basically rich people's hobbies. There's a lot more room for experimentation when profit isn't the main goal.

Cleveland puts you through ten years of "visioning" and "stakeholder" and "listening tours" and then does nothing. I refuse to go to any of those meetings anymore.

Out of concerns about antisemitism, I’m joining my friend Robert Kraft in banning Israel critic Macklemore from my stadium. Here’s a link for Kanye West tickets at that same stadium. by Jerry Jones

So I comment on the high-level problems and push back to the submitter. When the volume of generated code is smaller, I don't feel a need for automated assistance. Weirdly I don't see many in-between-sized pull requests that would likely benefit from LLM-powered review.

someguyincleveland @markwschumann.bsky.social · 12/09/2026
I don't (yet?) use LLM reviewers. When reviewing substantial LLM-generated code, I almost always quickly eyeball an obvious high-level problem. Such as, the LLM created its own logging subsystem instead of using the one already built into the application.

TIL that in the car rental business "availability" is not the same thing as a car actually existing.

And I am begging everyone to understand that an algorithm can't pick up a gun and start shooting people on its own. Someone needs to hand it a gun, or give it access to a Gun API. People are making conscious decisions to enable these things.

I mean I wasn't even mad about travel restrictions and rules on masks and such. But if you think those powers were excessive, this is an EXCELLENT time to advocate changes.

someguyincleveland @markwschumann.bsky.social · 11/09/2026
Remember in March 2020 how we discovered the extraordinary powers that some state constitutions give their governors in an emergency situation? And how shocked + angry certain people were about those powers? You know what, we can reconsider those powers now if we want.

Also we don't get enough reuse in the sense of "ya know, that complex enterprise application you asked for could be an Excel plugin instead." We often develop fresh applications unnecessarily, instead of extending things that already exist and users already understand.

I wish more organizations were doing that. Big Requirements Up Front are so wasteful and frustrating.
110
someguyincleveland @markwschumann.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
Okay but IME we rarely need to be faster about writing code. We need more thoughtful requirements and more effective reuse. LLMs are really good at coding solutions to things that have already been solved. That points to a failure of reuse!

Yes! Democracy is not the easy, simple, default way that societies work. It is an advanced system that requires effort and active support.

This right here. I am so tired of the "what could be causing all the weather drama?" in media. Fake uncertainty is a denialist tactic.

Often, the highest business value is in removing or consolidating features. Much of my best work has been reducing lines of code, like merging 11 slightly different variations of the same basic logic.

I think around 2012ish the federal government started funding free school lunches for everyone in high-need districts. Like you said, it's easier and more efficient... and it destigmatizes the free lunch.

I'm not sure rural areas have functioning small-d democracy. The de facto rule is not really one person one vote.
