We asked students to name and describe cliques in their peer ecology. One of our core findings is that the use of ethno-racial labels in clique perceptions was unrelated to the ethnic net segregation of friendship networks (“ethnic homophily”). The same was true for dislike networks.
Association between net ethnic segregation in friendship networks and the use of ethno-racial labels. Positive values on the x-axis indicate above-average ethnic homophily in a grade’s friendship network. Values on the y-axis indicate the share of students using ethno-racial labels in their clique descriptions. The figure shows no systematic association between ethnic homophily and the usage of ethno-racial labels.
