Posts like this make me think about how lucky we are in the UK to have the NHS. It has its flaws, like anything else, but knowing that people can receive treatment because they need it, rather than because they have the right insurance or enough money, feels like such an important principle to me.

Apparently “Pink Noise” is usually the best way of masking the noise of bagpipes. It’s similar to the sound of rain, which I can vouch helps me sleep at night.

You idly wander into a Gem Museum thinking “bound to be pretty things inside”. Then a staff member sees you gazing at Quartz, and before you know it, you’re having a fascinating lecture about how 1960’s radios work. Museum staff have this superpower to unlock curiosity in people, and I ❤️ it…

I thank you for the link to the ISDS document. And yes, it does seem ludicrous! As to politicians not being culpable for all our ills,I think part of the blame rests with the MSM. Are they trying to compete with social media by hyping up political personalities? it’s like it’s a soap opera!

Some people have fun by being “idly curious”. I do! I think that’s the basis of the flexibility towards learning you noted. I think It’s probably a personality trait, rather than something that necessarily requires higher educational attainment?

Mark Walling @markwalling.bsky.social · 19/03/2025

Quite. I’ve seen the stats you’ve probably seen. Tax avoidance and other scams, like the PPE scandal, is where HMG should be concentrating on to find the extra cash.

010

Mark Walling @markwalling.bsky.social · 19/03/2025

HMG have said they need to save £5billion by the end of the decade. So about c.1 million people, most of whom are probably aren’t financially well off, will lose £1000’s per year from Nov ‘26. My suggestion is that it would be better IF you had to do this, to ensure the wealthiest took the hit.

The criteria I’d use for universal provision would be “will nearly everybody need that support at some stage in their life?” Which includes everything you’ve mentioned. The logic being that there’s an administrative cost to means testing.

100

Mark Walling @markwalling.bsky.social · 19/03/2025

Yes, I understand why the cost of living, for a person with a disability, will be greater. If a person can’t afford this, then they must be helped. If they can however afford it, the PIP money they’d get would be better spent on a more worthy cause, IMO.

100

Mark Walling @markwalling.bsky.social · 19/03/2025

I think it’s incorrect that a person with daily living difficulties AND is on the breadline is going to lose £1000s from Nov ‘26. Conversely, if that person was a millionaire, I’d think it was correct. Presumably, the reason why PIP isn’t means tested is that the majority of recipients are hard up.
