This Long-tailed Blue is looking very warn and tired which is not surprising really as he has been on patrol for at least two weeks and has mated with at least three different females. He was desperately trying to find nectar today and sadly I think his days are numbered.

Yet another pair of Long-tailed Blues today - very worn male taking some sun after his dalliance with a fresh female

TWO pairs of Long-tailed Blues in cop on Portsdown this afternoon and a lovely fresh female - possibly seven in all. Looks like a migrant male got lucky with a stunning fresh female. A bumper crop will be due in October if the weather allows.

The normally manic Clouded Yellows on Portsdown Hill were stopping for photos in the warm overcast conditions this morning- including a nice helice.

Only managed to find a handful of Autumn Ladies Tresses on my local road verges today. I think the dry weather has really suppressed them this year.

Had some on the garden a few years back - sadly the slugs ate them!

My grass is absolutely parched but the BFT seems more resilient - I hadn’t noticed the marking but you are right the spots are large and close. She was very small which I find quite common in later broods and had nicely marked uppers with a good dusting of blue but I couldn’t capture it.

I planted some BFT deliberately but only occasionally do the blues visit so very lucky to spot her. She hung around for 30mins or so and laid quite a few eggs. Hopefully I will be able to find some caterpillars.V lucky 👌

Paid a visit to the M C Escher exhibition at Somerset House. Fascinated with his work since i was a kid, but even after all these years his drawings still bamboozle me even though I now know how they are done 🤷‍♂️

Long-tailed Blue in Hampshire today - one of about half a dozen sparring males all in similar condition which suggests to me that they are probably recent arrivals?

Today I visited a footpath alongside a large field sown as a herbal ley. The extensive clover has attracted hundreds of whites, Common Blues and no less than 43 Clouded Yellows. Given the field size I would think several hundred are present. I also counted at least ten Hummingbird Hawkmoth.

Intriguing find in the garden Purple Hairstreak hind wing - has been crunched by something. I can’t think of any Oaks in the local vicinity 🤔

Butterfly Emergency? On this small patch of Bramble we’re no less that eleven species of butterfly including multiples of several species. Reminded me of the ‘olden days’ 😀

A Purple Emperor pupa, that I took into protective custody as it was in a vulnerable location, emerged today as a beautiful empress. I returned her to her home wood and she flew straight up into an oak spray to await her suitors today.

A wander in the woods with UV last night revealed that seven out of twenty Purple Emperor remain giving a predation rate of 65% - it’s amazing that we ever see any adults! Some nice surprises included a stunning Puss Moth caterpillar and some final instar Brown Hairstreak.

Three species of orchid growing on my local verges including a veritable swarm of Bee Orchids. Some of the bees have tiny flowers this year- about half normal size, I suspect caused by the dry weather?

Oh the irony - the steep bank on the left is being left as a ‘biodiversity strip’ probably because it is difficult to mow? The flat area on the right, which has dozens of Bee Orchids, is mowed within any inch of its life!
