That's because every country has "biolabs" You probably have one within a couple miles of you. The use of unfamiliar terms to inspire fear is a common tactic of propagandists The notion of a biolab studying Yersinia Pestis in its region of origin is not disturbing. The bad lab technique is

Yersinia Pestis (the plague bacteria) first arose in Central Asia. Currently, the bet is on the region around Lake Issyk Kul in Kyrgystan. As such, it should surprise nobody that there would be research labs in Central Asia looking at one of the most notorious diseases in human history

"Only BSL 3" Everything you mentioned is contained by a BSL3 lab design: negative pressure, HEPA-filtered exhaust, two-door entry, safety cabinets, PPE BSL4 is country-level. Only a dozen or so exist in the US. Outside of government, these are at major research universities

The "strain" isn't the issue. It is the infection pathway Bubonic plague travels along the lymphatic system causing the characteristic swollen lymph nodes (buboes) Pneumonic plague is in the lungs. Early symptoms look like cold/flu. Treated at that stage 17-20% survival Septicemic is in the blood👇

Markle2k @markle2k.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Even with early treatment, the pneumonic form doesn't have an enviable death rate

"gain-of-function research" The catchword of the conspiracy crowd. The reason a lab in Central Asia would be studying Yersinia Pestis is because it first broke out in Central Asia and then traveled west along the Silk Road in the 13th century

Markle2k @markle2k.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Pneumonic plague is almost universally a death sentence by the time definitive symptoms set in. Early symptoms look like non-threatening illnesses. That is why the surveillance of close contacts and probably prophylactic treatment of health workers

You mean humans coming into contact with a wild virus through handling or interaction with wildlife? Yeah, that's pretty much how almost all zoonotic infections occur to the second degree (pets, livestock)

Markle2k @markle2k.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Don't get overparanoid. Plague is endemic in lots of places and this is where it originated from. No, not from a lab. In the animal population of Central Asia

For an extremely generous definition of "iteration" Goddard's was a pressure feed from LOx boiloff, with gasoline as fuel. He wanted to do a piston pump but the complexity and weight beat him (first flight went 47ft up) While Goddard corresponded with Von Braun, their turbopumps used diff gas source

Ukrainian children unlawfully taken from occupied Ukraine. Forcibly transferred to Russia. Separated from their country and identity. ‘Rescue’ is the Kremlin’s word. War crime is the legal category.

The key technology, the Merlin engines, were designed by an American engineer using a cycle and fuel that the Nazis never used The full-flow staged-combustion cycle of the Raptor engines, and CH4 fuel, had never been used before. The Ukrainian-designed RD-270 hypergolic never exited development

It wasn't quite like that. The USAF got lazy and was using the same exit route. The Serbian air defense commander set up on that route and blasted through the RCS threshold with a low frequency tracking radar. When the F-117 opened the door, the plane bloomed on the targeting radar

I don't think we have seen a reactionary movement like MAGA since the 1930s. The idea of removing rights from people for who they are, rather than what they have done, is alien to 'polite society'

If that's the core argument, she isn't looking back far enough or with open eyes. There was plenty of "tensions", often, as today, one-sided. American suffragists were, in contrast to some of their British counterparts, vehemently non-violent, but met with violence nonetheless

33 women protesters were taken to the Occoquan Workhouse in Fairfax County and subjected to brutal treatment by the prison’s guards in retaliation for the women’s ongoing peaceful protest for the right to vote.

Many gulf coast refineries are specifically designed for Latin American crude. But it is more expensive to refine And, first and foremost, these are untapped reserves. You need to build the infrastructure to get it out of the ground. And that is anything but "almost free"

He drained it of high quality crude and he's going to "refill it" with Venezuelan sludge. I'm going to guess that will work as well as replacing the vodka you stole from your parents' liquor cabinet with tap water But first, you have to get it out of the ground www.theguardian.com/business/202...

Because it's in the ground. Because there needs to be a lot of investment and infrastructure built (outside the US, mind you) to get it out of the ground. It's also very heavy, like tar, and not as useful

You can't even set up a tent within a couple miles of the actual meadows. You have to hike all the way to the general store, which is where the only road is. But, no bears. Everything went into the locker. They had poles for hanging your food, but nobody did that anymore Not my pics, btw

This is approximately where we set up the tent. No cars. Just rangers on horses with mules in tow. Above the tree line we encountered no bears despite Yosemite being on the other side of the pass into Lyell Canyon heading down to Tuolumne Meadows where there were "bear-proof" lockers for the packs

Bears don't come out in the day. And this wasn't a 'picnic ground'. It was the campground in King's Canyon where the station wagon got peeled like a banana. The bear encounter was at our stop on the PCT. When we did cross Donahue Pass into Tuolomne Meadows, they had bear-proof bins like KCNP had
