A few years ago, it would have been strange for an AI conversation to focus on electricity. Today, data centers are buying power developers as they struggle to meet demand. I didn't expect one of the more interesting AI stories of 2026 to involve power companies, but here we are.

Organizations spend so much energy on models & little on how they house their data or who can access it. That's backwards. If you don't understand your data's chain of custody, it's at risk. www.reuters.com/legal/legalindustry…

AI increases output speed, but decision quality still depends on data latency, freshness, and validation cycles. When those lag, decisions move on outdated inputs. Speed amplifies whatever sits beneath it. If data pipelines fall behind, misalignment spreads just as quickly as progress.

Sales reps tend to perform best when they can go deep on a single customer. Technical roles usually look to build skills with a specific capability, so need to work across clients. If you treat them the same, performance suffers, but if incentives reflect how each group operates, results improve.

Hesitation carries cost. Work stalls and responsibility diffuses. My time in the Navy taught me early on to gather inputs, assess risk, make the call, & own the outcome. Real leadership shows up when someone accepts responsibility & moves the work forward.

AI concentrates responsibility. As adoption accelerates, data discipline determines outcomes. Incomplete or poorly governed data scales risk. Data quality, access controls, and validation require clear ownership. Before expanding capability, examine the data environment behind it.

I was asked why a sales org wasn’t seeing the behaviors leaders wanted, despite incentives. Truth is, structure drives behavior. Pay a rep on one account & they’ll go deep there. Put tech on a pooled plan & they’ll specialize across customers. People move toward how they’re measured & rewarded.

When teams feel overwhelmed, direction becomes a leadership tool. Noise compounds stress and slows judgment. But discipline cuts through noise and protects momentum even when pressure rises.

We've all been meetings that ended without a clear owner or decision. Work stalls & responsibility thins. A good leader knows the next step is in their hands. Even when you're operating on limited intel, you can't afford lose steam. Momentum comes from action that someone is willing to own.

Debate has value. It sharpens thinking and surfaces risk. Progress follows when a leader makes the call, carries responsibility for it, and stays open to learning once the work moves forward. Teams move when they know the decision, the direction, and who is accountable.

Sold-out rooms usually tell you something before the program even starts. January's AFCEA DC luncheon with DISA was one of those moments. I'm truly grateful for AFCEA & everyone who keeps showing up to compare notes, challenge assumptions, & stay grounded in mission when conditions keep shifting.

Lately I’ve been thinking about how confidence gets mistaken for correctness. Fast systems may feel reliable before they’re proven, but trust comes from validation & context. As AI evolves, leaders have to slow the moment & ask where verification and judgment stay in the loop.

The Navy taught me that a briefing isn't complete just because no one has questions. A leader’s job is to create space for clarity. Ask the extra question. Make room for perspective. Alignment is a shared understanding, not the absence of noise.

Today is a reminder of the trust & collaboration of small businesses. Example: On our recent Japan trip, my wife Kellie met another small biz owner & they devised a plan to support each other’s work. It’s the small business ecosystem at its best: people helping each other deliver.

What do you do when your team is frozen with indecision? Overthinking can feel like control, but it delays progress. Here’s what helps me move forward: 1. Define “good enough” 2. Set deadlines 3. Treat decisions as checkpoints, not final verdicts 4. Ask for facts 5. Document & follow through

Leaders don’t need to be engineers, but they need enough technical fluency to cut through buzzwords. Too many conversations get lost in jargon. Technical fluency keeps leaders focused on the areas that drive real progress: outcomes, risks, and decisions.

Authentic leadership starts with restraint. It’s knowing when to speak and when to hold back. The leaders who earn trust communicate with clarity and purpose. Credibility grows through preparation, discipline, and the consistency of their actions.

The problem with generative AI is trust. That’s what matters. If we can’t trust it, we can’t use it in government systems. Operational use of AI depends on accuracy, explainability, and governance. Missions require outcomes that are verifiable and reliable.

In business and in the cockpit, hesitation is costly. On my first solo flight, I learned to trust the training, make the call, and keep going. Progress only happens when you choose to move forward.

Cloud isn’t going to be everything. The future is hybrid. Defense & intelligence missions need both flexibility and resilience; some workloads in the cloud, others on-prem for security or assurance. The leaders who balance both will set the standard.

LLMs generate predictions, not knowledge or reasoning. In high-stakes environments, false trust in these systems leads to real risk. Before scaling AI in government, we need clarity on what it actually does and where human judgment must remain in the loop. #AI #GovTech #LLMs
