My wife, father-in-law and I were just talking in our household. About 125 years of living in central Toronto between us and none of us have ever been mugged. Between us, we've lost laptops twice, phones twice and wallets half a dozen times in Toronto and they've always ended up returned to us.

There are actual possibilities there. Not enough savings to be material in terms of the city budget, but tens of millions - at least - could be redirected from dubious projects to ones that matter and send a message.

When your business model is under existential threat (Alto) it is a survival mechanism. Major expansion is blocked, unless Feds choose to destroy the waterfront and lose manyToronto seats. The solution is downsizing to a smaller scale & bankruptcy of Nieuport Aviation. Death throes will be painful.

Americans do not take Canada seriously. They think of it as a small, irrelevant place that can be poked fun at without any cost. I have encountered many Americans over the past 18 months who think the 51st state thing is kind of funny and something to joke about. They do not get it.

This is a good example of what @ntusikov.bsky.social and I have been warning about for years: US tech companies are uniquely susceptible to extra-legal US government pressure (Google isn’t compelled to change Lake Ontario’s name.) Because of this, they represent a direct threat to Canadian autonomy.
