Upon arrival, CECOT director told prisoners that they’d never see the light of day (or night) again. “Welcome to hell, I’ll make sure you’ll never leave.” Prisoners believed they’d die there - they thought they were already the living dead.
Hands and feet tied, forced to their knees, heads shaved. “Blood everywhere, screams, people crying - they couldn’t take it, urinating and vomiting on themselves. Forced into prolonged stress positions.
Guards savagely beat prisoners with their fists and batons. “Four guards grabbed me, beat me until I bled, to the point of agony. Forced my face to the wall. I lost teeth.”
CECOT is source of pride for El Salvadorian government. Social media personalities invited to tour it. (Plenty of videos out there under ‘tour of CECOT’).
Cramped cells, metal bunks stacked four-high. No mattresses or sheets. No access to outdoors and no contact with relatives. UN confirmed that CECOT was below minimum standard for incarceration.
Trump on record for expressing admiration for El Salvador’s prison system during meeting with El Salvador’s president at the White House. US administration publicly labels these migrants as all forms of ‘monsters’. US accused of making an example out of these people, sending a message across Latin America to stop coming to the US.
Report from ‘Human Rights Watch’ concluded that systematic torture and other abuses existed in CECOT and that almost half of the Venezuelans sent there had no criminal history.
