ABC Live: Market Forces questions Whitehaven Coal's future

Earlier today, Whitehaven Coal released its profit result.

It reported a statutory full-year profit decline of 41% to $385 million.

And when one-off "significant items" are excluded, the company's underlying annual profit was down 29% to $227 million.

The company attributed that falling profit to lower realised coal prices or "cyclical price weakness".

That fell below analysts' underlying profit estimates of $247.6 million, according to Visible Alpha data.

But Brett Morgan, Investor Campaigns Manager for Market Forces, argues that Whitehaven is failing to grapple with the prospect of coal demand "falling off a cliff".

He says AustralianSuper, the country's largest super fund, is also Whitehaven's top shareholder, owning 11.8% of the company's shares on issue.

He says Whitehaven and AustralianSuper have questions to answer.
