I leaned BASIC at school in 70s on a Wang 2200 mini computer. At university we learned FORTRAN using punch cards (FFS!) Imagine 1 card per line. Then waiting in a queue with 100 other students for punch card reader. Then getting a printout of errors. Rinse and repeat.

This study published by Duke University also only covers to 2023. Unfortunately they see no value in using the same scale for comparisons across age groups, but the lower set of graphs shows a wild uptick in the ratio of genders in their 20s.
