And using increased tax revenue as a benefit when Amazon have notoriously been able to minimise their taxes in every country where they operate. I think here I'm Spain my small business pays more tax than Amazon does.

We all know that the GDPR et al. aren't working great. Alas, the current proposals to fix that — in what EU jargon calls an "omnibus" — make it way worse. This counter-proposal is: better for people, simpler for businesses, *much* stronger on security, competition, sovereignty, and online safety. 🧵

A Real Digital Omnibus for European Competitiveness and Security
This document is offered as an expert contribution to ongoing discussions about the data aspects of the Digital Omnibus. Drawn from my experience in digital policy, technology strategy, and digital business, I find that the Commission's current Omnibus proposal contains a small number of provisions that achieve genuine simplification and strengthen the reliability of the regulatory environment, alongside a larger number of provisions that, however well-intentioned, would produce outcomes contrary to the legislative aims set out in the Commission's own framing. My purpose is to provide the framework and background information necessary for trilogue interlocutors to identify which provisions can be retained, which can be improved, and which should be reconsidered, so that the final Omnibus achieves the impact that its proponents seek.

This is the strategy I predict and advocate for but going in the other direction. Through open digital ecosystems, sovereign infrastructure & a shift away from a growth at all costs mindset we can build a parallel market of quality businesses that enjoy serving customers and all buy and work in that

There is nothing wrong with my 10-year old iMac, but Apple want me to chuck it out & buy a new one so they have stopped allowing software updates to work with models that fall outside the EU's Empowering Consumers Directive maintenance requirement: technically allowable but still sucks

Two years is ridiculous and not inevitable. I have worked in open data for over 20 years and there is no reason for this long. Globally other countries are able to do this. ECDC have released a summer newsletter warning of STD increases and have NO DATA to share on it not even preliminary data.

Is it you weren't meant to be human?

Mark Boyd @markboyd.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
Still annoyed by this. I am part of some lgbt tech groups here in bcn where people have been asking if increased STDs is a fact or rumour and the most recent state data is 2022. Now @ecdc.europa.eu says it's rising but doesn't actually link or publish any of the data it is withholding.

Mark Boyd @markboyd.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Its ridiculous to print this when the actual data you publish is from 2024. Can you share the actual data from 2026 please? What is the point of encouraging people to make data-informed decisions without sharing the actual data?

Most often I would remove it. But occasionally I reread the whole paragraph around it: if I have a lot of shorter sentences, the reading can pick up a pace that hurtles forward and maybe I want to slow down the reading rhythm a little so I leave it in.

This is how I use affirmations, sorry to get all woowoo. But when my brain is just talking shit I just repeat my affirmation over and over to help silence the chatter. Not quite a mute but it stops the endless blather sometimes when I don't need to think anything through but can't switch off.

Is that part of that idea of rejection of binary related terms?
100
Mark Boyd @markboyd.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Yeah thanks. Related to your research I have been thinking about how there is a whole group of amab gay guys who are proud of their pussies/cunts and the whole caged/clit-focused btms. I see that as a whole new type of gender fuckery that doesn't fit into current notions of masc/fem.

I just wondered if there was anything I could learn from the next generation?
100
Mark Boyd @markboyd.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
Yeah I can't DM you but you say younger gen are rejecting the need to delineate non-binariness and I have some non-binary folk who aren't into pronoun announcements while others feel more comfortable at events where they hear it.
100
Mark Boyd @markboyd.bsky.social · 05/08/2026
When I do any public speaking I always announce my pronouns. I'm the only one who does it at the conferences, webinars, etc that I attend and I do it as a kind of way to acknowledge that there are non-cis folk in our community. Given your findings here, is there a better way to do this now?

A year ago in our state of the api economy report I predicted that finops - and in particular ensuring AI costs did not spiral - would become a key issue this year. Up until a few months ago people were still disputing that this would be the case.

100%. We need a rejection of winner takes all and instead a return to servicing a sustainable business client base and doing it well. We need to create a market lane of businesses just doing the thing they do well instead of all wanting to become a bigtech monopoly

Nah. When you search for a doc it suggests email addresses. Also: I uploaded a document that had a numeric name that kinda looked like a date so google drive change the doc info created date to the date it Ai-supposed from the numeric name overwriting the actual upload/created date. Etc.
