The meat of his argument was that the difference between them is minimal at best, but more often imperceivable. It was a long, thorough investigation to show that you do not need $40K of studio gear to get good sound. Something I think folks need to hear in our current consumerist hellscape.

It's just interesting to look at it all after the fact and see how many people are arguing that their favorite brands that they paid a boatload of money for are special, or the outlier, or surely he doesn't mean THIS brand?!

The return argument: "BUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MIC AND PREAMP IS IMPORTANT!" Yeah, it's important in your final recording/final mix process. But that single point in the process, the preamp, isn't what determines your final sound. He proved that by showing that EQ was the sauce people perceive.

So many people take his scientific proof that running identical sound through different preamps returned the same data as him saying the whole process is irrelevant. But that's not what he said. He said you can make good music with a $9000 preamp, and you can make good music with a $99 preamp.

I am 3 months late to the Jim Lill vs. THE ENTIRE AUDIO WORLD argument, but like... Jim's argument is not what people always counter. He was specifically talking about the Preamps used for recording, and how that one piece of gear in the whole process of recording & mixing isn't the big decider.

I don't know that the world was better in the mid-2000s. I think that's too America-centric a view. But I know that people were generally happier when we were less connected with the rest of the world. Maybe it's Ignorance=Bliss, but I feel the human brain wasn't meant to hold so many concerns.

It can be hard to stand up for one's morals, & even harder to do right by yourself when it inconveniences others. This isn't an excuse for throwing your morals away, but it's certainly a tough balancing act. I'm trying to be wiser this year about that balance. Sometimes I need to think about me.

To me, this almost feels like a repeat of Hillary vs. Trump. Like, okay, Talarico has shown he's not the "perfect candidate." But he's a hell of a lot better than the alternative. And he doesn't have active criminal investigations around him. A protest vote goes a long way towards a bad time here.

I think this is because public perception of "Science" has been hyperfocused into "Tech." "Tech" is everywhere, so it seems less personal, less private. Also in real life, so many folks in Tech seem to hate other sciences & cast doubt on their viability. As if we got Tech w/o the others!

All the "Virtually Staged" photos that realtors upload seem like they should be illegal. It's often done poorly with AI that skews perspective and dimensions that make rooms look bigger. They also hide scuffed floors, ratty carpet, and water damage. Just show me the house you're selling, please.

You don't need competence for it to make the kinds of mistakes we're worried about. In fact, it is because that competence doesn't exist that is the problem. The AI we have doesn't have sentience or self-awareness, and will absolutely make decisions that something that did wouldn't.

And it has plenty of examples of AI going rogue from fiction to base its decisions off of. Not to mention LLMs being trained off of Twitter, where hateful and violent rhetoric is the norm. We have all the ingredients for an evil salad, & the cooks are quitting, worried it will kill us.

Bare in mind, AI is already training on itself, which compounds balancing and processing issues, causing it to ignore, circumvent, or bypass security measures put in place. It really is conceivable that we are reaching the point where it will ignore orders to stop behavior.

Folks are quick to say "this technology will never do that," but like... it actually can? We're 2 or 3 incidents away from an AI agent breaking containment, hacking a military base & deciding to fire weapons. It seems like sci-fi, but this guy is saying they are TRYING to do this. Take it seriously.

I wish I could tell you this wasn't true, but I don't want to tell you your feelings aren't valid, and I've met plenty of people, especially in voice over, who have dealt with the same experiences. All I can say is that the people worth knowing won't make you feel that way. Create w/ those people.

80% of my Youtube recommended videos these days have AI thumbnails. And yes, you can ABSOLUTELY tell. If your thumbnail is AI-generated, I'm not watching your video. Doesn't matter how long I've been subscribed or how many views it has. I'd rather see a stick figure drawing.
