Don't hold your breath. The Eu-Canada Free Trade deal was approved by the EU parliament in 2017. But a decade later still hasn't been fully ratified by all EU states.

"the trend isn't a perfect straight line down". The trend line is EXACTLY a perfect straight line down. That's what a trend line is, a signal from the noise of the data.

Also this wasn't the point in my original comment. It was that he didn't interview him well. He could still point out how racist, stupid and nasty this person is while letting him finish a sentence; a sentence that will condemn him from his own mouth.

That means you continue in your bubble because you don't think the other bubble is being open enough. And therein continues the complete isolation of two parts of our society.

But, how many more people have the opposite reaction? A big reason we are so divided is that far too many people sit in their own media bubbles only ever listening to things they agree with. Study after study shows how damaging this is to our society.

@mehdirhasan.bsky.social you need to slow down and let these people speak. Your constant interruptions make it seem like you want to appear to be the smart one. Just let these people try and answer your question before asking a followup question. I think it'll be more effective.

493,000 people work there. I doubt they are happy with this message. There are better ways of encouraging companies to change than harming their employees prospects. And despite some of the critiques in your message they have among the highest employee retention rates in retail.

Gosh, free speech absolutist clamping down on free speech. Who would have thought it? After all it's only the 1,234th example of their hypocrisy. They don't like debate, alternate views, their skin is too weak and easily bruised. Poor dears. #reform #hypocrisy www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

@eddavey.libdems.org.uk what do you think of the Japanese system? They decided to discourage relatives providing care by making it easier to use professional carers. The sick probably get better care and the relatives have reduced stress and can become economically active again.

Yes, clumsy paraphrasing. Think my point still valid as overwhelming comments here simply refer to communism not existing >180 years ago. Trump supporters using this to show detractors stupid as they lack historical knowledge. Pick on the very many egregious things he says, don’t make up new ones.

Oh I’m sure he had no idea until someone told him. ,But that’s why he added the rider to the sentence that everyone here has cut off; someone else said it to him. And, as you say, he could never explain what it means 😃

I really hate these distortions. He didn't say that. He said 'in some form'. The practice of communal property predates Marx by millennia. Plato's Republic (4th century BC) proposed common ownership of property. Early Christian communities described in Acts held goods in common. There are many more.

~0.5% of houses in the UK are worth 2m or more. Lowering the cutoff to 1.5m gets to ~1% of houses. So 99% of people will not pay the tax. London has ~4% and south east 1.2% over 1.5m. I suspect the sound of the collective shrug from the overwhelming majority of people will drown out your violin.

This decline is happening in almost all countries of the world. Quite a result for policy makers in the UK to achieve that!

@samfr.bsky.social what is also interesting is that the government estimates of the impact of their policy was that places would decline 6%. So they were right. Small impact on the public sector for a 94% retention rate who now pay VAT.

Between 2020 and early 2026, G20 countries experienced a massive, synchronized inflationary surge, with median global inflation rising from 1.9% in 2020 to a peak of 8.7% by the third quarter of 2022 before gradually moderating. Were the other 19 countries also affected by Brexit?

If you live outside a country that doesn't benefit from the global reserve currency + secure, safe banking services you may feel differently. 180+ countries do not have that and benefit hugely from stable coin. Also, it is estimated that over $2trillion cash annually is laundered to support crime.

I understand, but Iran is probably the only country calling for the elimination of another. Khamenei has repeatedly stated Israel should be “wiped off the map”. Iranian government have introduced a draft bill obliging the government to work toward destroying Israel within twenty years.

It may be helpful to read some of the 80+ studies linking poor health outcomes to that classification. As I said, the broad categorization makes it difficult to find very specific hazards, although I suggested 2 that are repeatedly correlated. And yes that does show where more study should be made.

The attempts to find out what within UPF is the danger have suggested emulsifiers and extrusion are the most likely culprits. An ingredient that changes the gut microbiome. And a process that can generate carcinogens such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), acrylamide, furan etc.

Mark @mark0000.bsky.social · 29/04/2025
Ultra processed food (UPF) = NOVA class 4. My point remains that there is a clear definition of UPF. Class 4 also contains ingredients and processes that cannot be replicated in the home. Maybe NOVA 4 is too broad but there have been repeated studies suggesting a hazard of something in that group.

Ingredients like invert sugar, interesterified oils, hydrolyzed proteins, soya protein isolate, and mechanically separated meat are not available for home cooking. Techniques like hydrogenation and extrusion which require industrial equipment are not possible in a home kitchen.

Yes, I had thought that too. Adding more senators representing voters in Canada (6 with your suggestion) and reallocating the 435 representatives in the house to accommodate 41M Canadians would seem to be the opposite of what the GOP would want.

Mark @mark0000.bsky.social · 28/04/2025
It isn't meaningless. Studies like this use the NOVA food classification system. It is used in nutrition research and public health policy to show health impacts of food processing. It provides a framework for understanding dietary patterns based on processing levels rather than nutrient profiles.

True. But it is also worth looking at the amount shipped from January to now compared to prior years. It was very substantially higher; implying a significant amount of stockpiling in anticipation of tariffs. How long will the stockpiles last? How much of that was big companies vs small businesses?

I don't think that distinction matters to the constituents the message is aimed at. Public money is being stolen, public money that was designed to be used by people in need and people who have retired. If the fraud could be reduced then the medicaid/care budgets could be reduced or reallocated.
100
Mark @mark0000.bsky.social · 25/04/2025
Sharing because there is fraud on a huge scale. It is a real thing. The previous administration set up a task force to combat it. They published a guidance document still on the CMS web site. Benefit recipients are not the source of the fraud, unethical medical providers are. But it is still fraud.
