Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 6hThe 17th/18th century bridge at Pont Fadog, Dyffryn Ardudwy with its unusual inscribed slab dated 1762. It apparently commemorates the repair of the bridge and road route in 1760 by William Vaughan of Cors y Gedol and his stonemason H. Edward 1234
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 9hLola loves these stone stiles over the thick field clearance walls at Dyffryn Ardudwy with their raised walkways 🙂 0160
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 10hLovely riverside walk along the Afon Ysgethin & up the Ardudwy trail to the isolated drovers & pack horse bridge at Pont Scethin surrounded by the Rhinog Mountains. Gill & I had always intended to visit here after seeing Fay Godwin’s photos of it & hopefully she was there in spirit. 1326
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 22hGreat location looking out to sea from the head of the valley. Lots of round house settlement around it too. Fascinating site where no excavation has taken place. 020
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Now that I am safely back down out of the Rhinog mountains here are some more views of the Craig y Dinas hillfort. While considered to be Iron Age it reminded me a lot of small Early Medieval defended sites. The 2m wide wall is impressive as is the passage entrance. #HillfortsWednesday 3859
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Just passing the Craig y Dinas hillfort snd settlement on it’s rocky outcrop in Dyffryn Ardudwy with Moelfre in shadow behind it #HillfortsWednesday 111010
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Lovely day exploring Moel y Golfa on a long circular from Criggion. Up past the gypsy monument and down to Trinity Well and back round via Middletown. Really clear distant views today. Loads of tree graffiti dating from 1916 - 2026 on the beech trees by the well. Lola loves the two rock scrambles 🙂 0142

Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Nice to see the parch marks of the late Flavian fort at Caersws appearing on the latest Google Earth coverage. The inner roads and stone defence wall along with eastern road and multiple defensive ditches can all be seen. The earlier Flavian campaign fort defences also appear east of the village. 2448

Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Such a recognisable style in the 70’s. My parents had loads of it and I suspect I could still find some in mom’s kitchen cupboards. 010
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 04/10/2026I think the only advantage of blocking them is that you don’t build up a huge follower count which is actually full of fake accounts you never interact with or follow. It’s also a precaution against any repeat interactions even though they are mostly one-off follow events 020

Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Amazing day for seeing late season dragonflies. Easily the highest count for early October. A decade back I would only see 1-2 Common Darter. Today there were easily 100 per km stretch of the canal. Great to see multiple Willow Emerald for the first time too & loads of Migrant Hawker #dragonflies 0141

Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 30/09/2026It’s a long time since I have visited the rather hidden Roman bath house at Prestatyn. It is tucked away on a residential estate down Melyd Avenue. Built in 120 CE & expanded 150 CE it formed part of a 1st-3rd c. industrial settlement where iron, lead and bronze metal working took place. 0232
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Good to see the Clive Engine House at Talargoch near Prestatyn today. Despite restoration & repair work in 2012 it seems a bit forgotten, hidden by trees & not signposted from the road. It is one of the best preserved Cornish engine houses in N. Wales built in 1860 to pump water from the lead mine. 1172
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Looking forward to a read of Amy Blakemore’s fictional take on the events surrounding the 1381 Peasants Revolt. 040
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Funny how memories get a bit confused. When I was at Llanbabo Church last week looking at the ‘Celtic’ heads above the door I had a distinct feeling Gill & I had been there before but wasn’t quite sure. Turns out we had in May 2000 after she had broken an ankle walking on Elidir Fawr, Eryri 🙂🥲 0170

Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Another elaborate, artefact rich and nameless modern memorial in the sand dunes at Llanddwyn Island, Anglesey. Given the lyrics on the small tablet maybe a Liverpool supporter ? It is unlikely the planted Hazel tree will survive on this wind lashed and treeless island. 070
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 27/09/2026I always photograph memorials to people that you find in remote locations. In this case on top of Parys Mountain, Anglesey. They’re part of the funerary & ritual archaeology of the future. In this case, given the date of death (July 2020), you wonder if Kirsty (33) was a Covid victim. 1151

Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 26/09/2026The Pen yr Orsedd standing stones near Llanfairynghornwy, Anglesey. Unfortunately both are on private farmland and both were surrounded by cows when I visited, but you can still get a good view from the road. The northern stone is apparently the tallest on the island at over 5 metres. 1344
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 26/09/2026Good to see the small early medieval defended site at Porth Trefadog, Anglesey has recently had access improved with signage & an excellent info board. Good conservation work too to prevent erosion. A circa 1050-1150 hall & lookout over the landing area or perhaps a settled Irish Viking family unit. 1262
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Made me smile 🙂 A holy water stoup at the entrance to Llanfaethlu medieval church, Anglesey. 0242
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Great to see the location of the earliest fossils in England and Wales at Llanbadrig Point on the geopark trail. I can’t show you any as they are microscopic bacteria known as Stromatolites in the limestone rock of the Gwna melange formation. Found some of the original cores. 860 million years old! 0131
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 25/09/2026I quite like to get to know the geology of an area when I’m on holiday and this has been an excellent guide to the numerous geopark trails on Anglesey. Copies are available in the Oriel Llangefni gallery bookshop or from the GeoMon website here www.geomon.org.uk/product-cate... 080
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Yes that’s what I thought when I visited Oriel earlier in the week 👍 000
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 25/09/2026St. Patrick’s cave and well in the cliffs below Llanbadrig Church, Anglesey. The cave entrance is much shorter than it would have been due to lots of roof collapse in recent years and it is quite dangerous to visit. The entrance area was surrounded by Golden Samphire plants. 1143
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 25/09/2026A spot of birding at Porth Trefadog and Porth Trwyn on the west coast. Lots of Curlew, Little Egret fishing in the rock pools, Turnstone turning stones, Choughs bouncing along the cliffs, Oystercatcher’s piping and Cormorants on lookout. 0103
Mark Walters @mark-walters.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Llangaffo Church is 19th c. built on an earlier church site. The church was locked which prevented viewing of some 9th-11th century memorial stones inside. Outside you can still see some medieval cross slabs lined up and the base of a cross shaft. The original church door is now the churchyard entry 0112
