I don't disagree with the fundamental advice from the essay. Everyone should be aware of AI and the serious economic and workplace challenges it's like to create. The real problem, though, is not AI. The problem is the way AI tools are likely to be used, whether they're any good or not.

The essay's basic synopsis is that - AI is getting really smart really fast, - Folks who aren't immersed in AI regularly don't understand this, and - These non-techy bystanders had better prepare for major economic upheaval.

Enrollment at UNCA – Blog @ Mark’s Math
The UNC System tells us that enrollment is the driving cause of a continuing financial crisis at UNCA; that narrative is, at best, incomplete.

CBS claims that politics have nothing to do with the decision to cancel Colbert. Maybe, though, politics *should* be considered in this kind of decision?

I've set up a blog! OK, it's only got one post so far and it's totally experimental but maybe it will go somewhere. It's built using Quarto (@quarto.org) and I plan to discuss math, data, tech, teaching, higher education, and related political issues. Check it out: blog.marksmath.org

The University of Virginia is one of the most elite public schools in the nation and the state of Virginia has a Democratic governor with narrow Democratic majorities in both houses. It's an extremely bad sign for higher education, if UVA can't even try to tackle this fight.

According the author, a former general counsel for the University, "the university's compliance with Title VI is clear"

Mark McClure @mark-mcclure.bsky.social · 01/07/2025
Key counter point: Title VI prohibits quotas or programs that are exclusive to any one protected class. It does not prevent federal contractors, such as universities, from pursuing the goal of creating a diverse community...

The key allegation is under Title VI: "No person in the United States shall, on the ground of race, color or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance."

I have no idea if this is AI or not, particularly after last week's NY Times AI quiz where my awful score was about average. My best guess is that it is AI based primarily on Cruz's reference to the Philippians as the Fallopians.
