Made pancakes for breakfast, kids were utterly unimpressed with my no utensil pancake flipping technique. (Professional chefs gonna chef). Pride slightly deflated, but unbroken.

Found a medlar tree near our house, it's full to bursting of fruit, may have to forage some of it, for...science.

More often than you'd think I'm reminded of Matt Reeves' "the Batman", and especially the scene were Oz Cobb (Farrell) gets really upset with master detectives Batman (Pattinson) and Jim Gordon (Wright) misunderstanding Spanish.

This just reminded me of an incident many years ago involving an attempt at making beetroot kvass, non-fermentation grade bottles, a pair of hefty explosions, and a literally purple wall.

Went out for a walk with our youngest, found a treasure trove of blackberries, hawthorn and buckthorn. Admittedly, Arthur was not as excited as I was.

Finished "Lanterns" yesterday, spectacular television, excellent story. Would be nice to get a season two, but I'd be fine like this.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: on the set of the Jerry Springer show, a man sits in a chair. Jerry signals off-stage and says, “we have with us: your ancestor who crawled out of the ocean 375 million years ago!” Panel 2: the live studio audience is booing. Panel 3: security attempts to break up a fight between the man on stage, and his ancestor, a tiktaalik.

Rediscovering the "Tröckener Kecks" while working, in the 80's and 90's they were the most active band on the Dutch touring circuit, playing some really pleasant sounding punk'ish rock & roll. Good times.

My parents were watching Alien, which they loved, when I was 6, can't remember if they'd allowed me to watch or if I'd snuck downstairs, but everything about that film scared me to death. Especially captain Dallas in the vent system.

Kids have been watching and playing Sonic the Hedgehog, they're now running around the living room, in character as Silver and Shadow the Hedgehog, proclaiming that a cheetah is not as fast as they are. :p

I have this book, have had it for a number of years, it's (as far as I can work out) excellent scholarship, and I want to give it a new home. Does anyone want it? It's free, if you pay for postage.

Have been reading "Churchill's folly" by Anthony Rogers before bed, a very well written history. You'd think, based on the title, that it's about the Gallipoli mess, but no, ol' Winston was involved in two very messy defeats in the same part of the world.

I wish someone would make a movie using Steven Erikson's "Gardens of the Moon" as the source material. It started life as a script anyway. And it reads as a series of chamber pieces, so you can film large portions with practical effects.

Had a very realistic dream in which a (somehow very bearded and long haired) Ryan Reynolds starred in a remake of "the Maltese Falcon". This should now happen, I feel.

First part of the latest "Lanterns" episode is incredible. Weirdly reminiscent of "Mystic River", in a way that collective trauma tore apart a group of people and bonded them at the same time. Weirdly (but good) subdued performance by Fillion as Guy Gardner. 10/10, would and will watch again.

This may be hyperlocalized slang, but a term we use in kitchens around here is "cowboying", which is basically any kind of off-menu improvisation by wandering into the walk-in fridge and seeing what's available.

Finally watched "Supergirl". Was it worthy of all the awards? Nope. Was it a rollicking good time? Absolutely, would watch again. Thoroughly decent superhero flick with a lot of heart.

Suddenly remembered watching "the Last Emperor" with my parents, when I was...8? Think I'm due a re-watch. Magnificent film. Every performance is flawless, and the camerawork is top notch.

Bolted upright during the night, because I'd suddenly realised something about "Lanterns". I'd immediately realised the sheriff being from Gotham was somehow important, and it just hit me. If she's not the Manhunter, she's Bruce Wayne's cousin. Kane being the surname of Bruce's mum. I'm a slowpoke

Studying for a social responsibility exam that I have tomorrow, in Dutch. It just hit me that I know most of this stuff from 15+ years ago when I worked on a cruise ship. But in English, the abbreviations are completely different though, which throws me for a loop.

Turns out that I'm really not very good at having time off work. Think that, philosophically, this is tied into this weird social pressure that turns your means of employment into a big part of your identity, which is awful. STOP THINKING ABOUT WORK AND FEELING GUILTY ABOUT BEING AT HOME, JACKASS

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a horseshoe crab watches as a variety of prehistoric creatures swim towards an ethereal light. An ammonite calls back to the crab, “come on, horseshoe crab! We’re all evolving!” Panel 2: the horseshoe crab stays in position and replies, “nahh that’s crazy” Panel 3: the horseshoe crab is superimposed in front of a future premonition: a rather miserable-looking human slouched in the glow of a desktop computer. The horshoe crab swims away and says, “good luck tho”

I'm doing a course for work, which means I have to do an exam on wednesday. Hate doing those, but my first practice exam was a smashing success, so am very relaxed about it. Told my employer a while back they have my permission to send me on any course they want, certifications are great.

Reading Constantine Pleshakov's "Stalin's Folly", and was struck by this passage. About how WW2, and Stalin's policies related to it, killed off feminism in the Soviet Union. The bit below it about alcoholism us also telling.

Have already started on Stalin's Folly, it's wonderfully written, and harrowing, and it makes the fact that the Soviets managed to extricate themselves from that disaster even more impressive. Bonus points to Zhukov for not punching Stalin in the face immediately, though it might have helped.

Off to work. Only today and tomorrow to go, then a full 1,5 weeks off. Am on the verge of a complete exhausted meltdown, so some time off is welcome. Combining kids, work, and being social with what I now know to being autistic with a side of ADHD is...tiring.

Thrift shop haul! Excitement. Especially curious about Pleshakov's book, completely unknown to me. The Soviets had a bit of a rocky* start when the Axis forces invaded, Pleshakov apparently got a hold of a lot of primary sources to reconstruct this. *nightmarish, disastrous, calamitous.

Someone should produce a drama series about daily life in 1420's Mystras, following some rich silk merchant's family and everyone in their employ and service. The Onedin line, but medieval Roman style.
