I noticed a similar direction in EoW’s narrative, honestly. There’s a lot of Magical Girl & Shojo baked in there that I adore. Doing that for the OOT remake, however, is one helluva ballsey move on Nintendo’s part. Even if they’re blending just a bit of Shojo fantasy into Tolkien-like aesthetics.

I think the issue is less that the artstyle’s aimed at kids… & more that Nintendo simply isn’t catering exclusively to western teenage male sensibilities.

The issue, however, is twofold. 1. The maximalist artstyle has become tragically associated with AI as of late. This probably played a large part in people’s instinctive reactions. 2. The doll-like character designs, intricate clothing & large eyes to me at least evoke memories of Shojo media.

My one disagreement is I don’t think they did it for the kids—at least not entirely. Commercial-level media aimed at kids almost never uses a maximalist art-style. I believe the artstyle’s aimed towards adults nostalgic for the very high-fantasy style you spoke of in this video.

The OOT Remake characters look pretty doll-like to me, and there are probably a bunch of reasons related to rendering, face model shapes, etc But also hugely thick fabric with over-sized stitching is, well, something you'd see on dolls:

I also like how Link’s outfit in particular actually looks like it’s made from foilage & materials from the forest—which really sells the fact that he’s an outsider in Castle Town much better than the original did imo. There’s world-building in the outfit. ✨

I always get a kick out of how much more stressed ALTTP Link is compared to the others—his gane does feel like a bullet hell sometimes fr. 😅🤭

Skyward Sword Link points his sword steadily forward as he runs, as was common among players due to the game’s motion controls. A Link To The Past Link is depicted as visibly more stressed than the others, most likely in-part due to the close proximity of Blue Bari, jellyfish monsters.

Learning the first two levels of Demolition:
1. Safety is paramount! Be aware of what might trigger an explosion - fire, heat, vibrations, tripwires, timers running out, etc. Always equip protective gear. And take cover!
2. You experiment with basic explosives, from tiny snap-bangs to thrown grenades or long-fuse dynamite. Satisfyingly BOOM, but dangerously indiscriminate.

For developers - May 1st is the latest date I will consider submissions of games to be included in the showcase, with May 15th the final date for trailer submission. There is no wiggle room on the trailer submission date, due to needing to produce ASL, BSL, and Audio Described showcase versions.
