Here's why I edited this book: Melinda had spent years interviewing #refugee families. We worked out how to tell their stories. It worked because she had their trust. It was brilliant #journalism & it humanised people. #books #editing #publishing marisa.com.au/editing/

It's a Tuesday so here is a Blind Date... but with a news story/feature, not a book. The story has: - pageant queens - regional Australia - gems of info from the national archives - a satellite crash - international prizes - trade deal jokes - a ton of rumours

My 1st BF was a death metal bass guitarist. The lead singer of that band, however, was a guy called Suresh. Stigmata has played globally in the decades since. But Suresh isn't just a rockstar on stage but also behind a screen.

One day I may write a "How the fuck did this story happen?" post abt it & you will see the behind the scenes nonsense to get this story moving. www.theage.com.au/world/asia/w... Maher allowed those sorts of stories to happen. He commissioned and fought for freelancers to write them.

I thought "That's the sort of journalist I want to be. Kind. Making mistakes because I am trying and learning as I go. But writing the stories that are important to hear because things aren't black or white but life is messy and these are the stories that matter." And Maher backed it. Fully.

That's not why it's impt to me. I don't pitch to either pub now. I saw how important it was to people, how it was an untold story, how it was important others know about it, how reporting it could help educate people and move people closer to a resolution. And how it affected them once it was run.
