I got a request from a reporter about Trump's statement that "what happened to global warming?" w.r.t. the cold event covering much of the U.S. this weekend. Here is my reply.
> How do you respond to “whatever happened to global warming?” What happened to it?

It's winter. Cold events still happen, although less frequently.

> Is there a connection between these type of big cold events and climate change and if so, can you explain it?

There is disagreement on this in the community, but I don't think
there's any connection. As I said, cold events still happen even with
global warming. The effect of climate change is to reduce the
frequency/intensity of these events.

> Can we still have extreme cold spells like this in a warmer climate? Why?

Climate change has warmed the climate by a few degrees. So with
climate change this event is (say) 30F below normal while without
climate change it would have been 35F below normal. So, yes, cold
events still happen, and climate change is a relatively minor change
to a significant event like this.

It's important to compare this to heat waves. A heat wave is maybe 15F
warmer than average, so adding 5F to that is a much bigger impact.
> Is this cold spell really record breaking or have we just grown more accustomed to warmer winters? How does it compare to 1985 or 1978 or the 70s and 60s or earlier?

No, not record breaking. Uri in 2021 was much much colder. In fact,
we get events of this magnitude in Texas every few years.

> Are we talking breaking many all-time records, or many monthly records or even many daily records?

Perhaps a few records will be set, but the event is just not that
extreme. As you said, we're in the process of forgetting how cold it
was in the 20th century.

> And finally the term ‘environmental insurrectionists’ Could you respond to that please?

It seems everyone is an insurrectionist these days.

The claim that “emissions have come down” in this @nytimes.com @sominisengupta.bsky.social article on where we are ten years post-Paris is FALSE. Global emissions were at an all-time high in 2024. As it stands this claim is misinformation. They need to issue a correction!
Text from a NYT article:

Emissions have come down, but there's still far to go.

Call this good-ish news. Lower emissions mean the arc of temperature increase has curved downward over the past 10 years. If countries stick to current policies, the global average temperature is projected to rise by 2.5 to 2.9 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.
